When you are a music critic, there are times things fall on your doorstep (or in truth pop into your email inbox) that you just know you aren't going to like. Well, at the very least you expect not to like it. You know yourself. You know your tastes. If somebody sends me an email saying, "Hey Chris, here's an indie pop band with a female singer," and my ears perk up and I get excited. There is a good chance I will like that band. On the other hand, if you say, "Hey Chris, here's a metal band from Sweden," the odds are not in my favor. We Are The Catalyst is a metal band from Sweden. They have a new song called "Predators." Guess how I feel about it.
The second those metal guitars, in all their dull cacophony, hit I knew I was going to be out on "Predators."
Heavy metal isn't my thing. The second those metal guitars, in all their dull cacophony, hit I knew I was going to be out on "Predators." It's metal. It's not my thing. It sounds unpleasant to me. I also find the lyrics and the theme of the song a little silly. The band said they wanted to make this song "darker and heavier" than their previous work. You can't see me, but I'm giving a thumbs down to that idea.
However, I want you to be aware this song is there for you. "Predators" will be on their upcoming album Ephemeral, which is coming out in early 2019. If you like heavy metal you may want to check out We Are The Catalyst. I will listen to that Atom and His Package song about black metal instead.
