We Are Messengers, Ireland’s worship band, dropped their EP, Honest, not long ago. The lead track on the EP is “Maybe It’s Ok.”
A song about discarding shame and its accompanying effects, the song encourages listeners to rebuild their lives, casting off pain, humiliation, and feelings of worthlessness that many times result in suicide. “Maybe It’s Ok” provides a way to reduce self-imposed strictures.
We Are Messengers got together in 2015, releasing their debut self-titled album a year later. Almost overnight, the album soared into the Top 10 on Billboard’s Christian chart. The band consists of Darren Mulligan (lead vocals), Heidi Mulligan (vocals), Kyle Williams (guitar), Drew Kerxton (drums), and Drake Kennedy (bass). Before founding We Are Messengers, Darren and Heidi Mulligan performed with The Remission Flow.
The muscle of the lyrics is found in their compelling intimacy – that “it’s ok if I’m not ok.” In other words, that perfection is an illusion.
“Maybe It’s Ok” rides gleaming surfaces and oscillating hues that segue into a delicious pop-flavored melody rife with a pulsing rhythm and iridescent colors. Mulligan’s warm, alluring voice pulls listeners in like a powerful magnet, as he delivers the song’s potent lyrics.
“If I didn't know what it hurt like to be broken / Then how would I know what it feels like to be whole / If I didn't know what it cuts like to be rejected / Then I wouldn't know the joy of coming home / Maybe it's ok if I'm not ok / Cause the one who holds the world is holding onto me / Maybe it's alright if I'm not alright / Cause the one who holds the stars is holding my whole life.”
The muscle of the lyrics is found in their compelling intimacy – that “it’s ok if I’m not ok.” In other words, that perfection is an illusion.
“Maybe It’s Ok” isn’t simply gorgeous music, which it is, but a whole lot more – it contains a message akin to air to a drowning man.
