Long Beach, California’s Wargirl recently unleashed the music video for “Poison,” a track from the band’s self-titled debut album, slated to drop April 19, on the Clouds Hill label.

Wargirl was put together by guitarist Matt Wignall, and includes: Samantha Park (vocals), Tamara Raye (bass), Enya Preston (keyboards), Erick Diego (percussion), and Jeff Suri (percussion). The band’s sound is best described as a heady concoction of garage rock, disco, reggae, Afrobeat, and post-punk.
With a pair of European tours under their belts, involving an appearance at the Reeperbahn Festival, at the present juncture Wargirl is in Europe for more shows and will highlight the FM4 Festival, in Vienna.
With “Poison,” Wargirl delivers a delicious toxin.
Explaining the lyrics for “Poison,” the band says, "When sketching out the lyrics for “Poison” we were writing “your poison” and “you’re poison" over and over again. Like many of our songs the lyrics have multiple layers to the meaning. “Your poison" could be words that someone is dishing out, or maybe a politician is poison in the literal sense of “you are poison.” Then there is the good side of poison. Sugar can kill you if you eat too much, but a little bit of poison can also make you happy. Everyone has their Poison."
“Poison” starts off on an rolling bass line accompanied by straightforward percussion. Creamy, soaring synth colors surface and drone radiant colors, as Wignall’s guitar adds skiffing riffs and tight scratching accents.
The melody combines savors of electro-pop and new wave with the pulsing flow of disco. Park’s sonorous voice is potent, especially in the higher ranges. Buff sylph-like vocal harmonies infuse the tune with a retro ambience, as if from the soundtrack of a ‘70s James Bond flick, vaguely wicked with a sinister sensuality billowing forth.
Highlighted by the lush, sultry bass line, the rhythm sways with hypnotic undulations, enticing with suggestive appeal. With “Poison,” Wargirl delivers a delicious toxin.
