VOIMATON DROPS ‘DEMO 2019’
Chicago’s death/doom outfit Voimaton dropped Demo 2019 very recently. And it kicks major butt.
Made up of Dave Tibbetts (bass, vocals), Henry Fordney (guitar), and Pat O’Hara (drums), the band’s genesis occurred with the end of Narcotic, in 2016. Both Tibbetts and O’Hara were part of Narcotic, prior to its expiration.
Tibbetts and O’Hara formed a new project, which initially was nameless and suffered setbacks during 2017 and 2018. Then in November 2018, Fordney joined up and Voimaton took on structure as a trio. Apparently the band gained resilience and experience because they’ve arrived with a powerful three-track demo recorded, mixed and mastered by Sean Daily at Jamdek Studios in Chicago.
The EP opens with “Primal,” traveling on deep distorted guitars thrumming with cavernous power, as O’Hara’s finessed drumming provides a driving beat. Growling vocals deliver wicked flavors without resorting to the obscene screaming so prevalent in death metal. A grinding breakdown presages a streaming propulsive interlude, and then shifts tempo and descends to the abyss of Tartarus on rumbling tones.
The bass on this track is profoundly bottomless and secures the dark textures of the tune.
“Erudition” opens on searing, grating guitar colors attended by a bass line from the center of the earth. Sheering vocals introduce a brief breakdown, followed by muscular subterranean resonance riding rapidly stuttering guitars, as Tibbetts’ demonic voice grimaces overhead. The bass on this track is profoundly bottomless and secures the dark textures of the tune. Once the tempo increases, a scorching guitar sends the harmonics to Factor Five levels.
“Apotheia” seethes with yawning hues atop a measured groove. The bass line vibrates tectonic plates, as it spews out mysterious black emanations of hypertrophic energy. Rife with dread and nightmarish pigments, the visible disturbance of doom-flavored textures pulverizes the atmosphere with spectral sonic gesticulations akin to hell boiling with living flesh.
Voimaton delivers doom out of madness on the scale of matter, like something out of a cosmic Neronianism. This band has it going on!
