VETTY VIALS RELEASE SUPERB ‘CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF’
Vetty Vials is a pop-punk outfit from Sydney, Australia, who, moments ago, dropped a new album via Whiskey and Key Records. It’s called Conversations With Myself.
Although the band definitely fits into the pop-punk category, what sets them apart is Vetty’s delicious twang-filled voice, a voice chock-full of country-pop inflections, infusing the lyrics with a potent cutting tang.
Releasing their debut EP, I Am Okay, I Promise, in 2017, since then the band has toured Australia sharing the stage with bands such as Clowns, Press Club, The Bennie, and The Lazy Susans. Vetty Vials is made up of Yvette Vials (vocals, guitar), Paul Anderson (bass), Matt O’Keefe (guitar), Anthony Maslen (drums), and Daniel Antix (guitar). Mitchell Johnson plays drums on “Better Than This” and “Say.”
With eight-tracks, the album starts off with “Face It,” opening on jangly guitars and a rolling rhythm powered by a hefty bassline. Vetty’s voice, kind of drawling, kind of Dolly Parton-ish, is both distinctive and easy to listen to, projecting slicing intonations full of glossy timbres.
Vetty’s voice really kicks into overdrive on this track, exuding bold, tight momentum.
The best tracks on the album include “Pride,” traveling on thrumming deeper guitars ramping up to wall-of-sound dynamics. I love the rumbling drums on this track, giving the rhythm inordinate pulses. Vetty’s voice really kicks into overdrive on this track, exuding bold, tight momentum.
“Tired” begins with tasty alt-rock flavors, low-slung and thick, and then adds a gleaming guitar, as Vetty’s voice glides overhead. “Dust” travels on surging country-pop flavors tinted with punk muscle. Vetty’s vocal range asserts itself on this track, soaring upwards, while simultaneously displaying depth and creamy melodicism.
“Better Than This” features Vetty’s voice from the get-go, followed by snarling, heavy guitars dropping into glinting metallic textures. Radiantly galvanizing vocal harmonies instill this track with dazzling colors, as does a searing short guitar solo.
Vetty Vials delivers pop-punk energy laced with tantalizing country-pop filaments. The combination, paired with Vetty’s grand voice, is oh la la.
