UWMAMI’S SUMMER SERIES – IRISH HIP-HOP
Singer-songwriter and producer Uwmami, one of Ireland’s foremost hip-hop artists, is back at it. This time with her Summer Series, featuring a new track every Friday from her favorite up-and-coming Irish artists.
According to Uwmami, right now she’s “focusing mainly on production and mixing, creating space” for a potent group of vocalists. So far, the series encompasses “Six Drinks,” featuring AweSimon, “9254 Dreamers,” featuring Aaron Everything, and “Posture,” featuring Eiffe. Artwork for July’s releases is by the talented Nonzus Magnus.
“Six Drinks” opens on oscillating emerging synths flowing into a measured pulsing trap beat, riding a fat bassline, thumping kick-drum, and crisply popping snare. AweSimon’s rich filtered voice invests the lyrics with tasty smoke-filled savors. When Uwmami’s deliciously inflected tones enter, the song takes on mirroring echoes, injecting the tune with cool textures.
“9254 Dreamers” rides a crunching industrial trap groove, as Aaron Everything’s slightly reedy tenor imbues the tune with tantalizing textures and beau coup passion. The undulating rhythm gives the music a sensuous allure, both captivating and seductive.
Uwmami’s production embraces what I call raw industrial hip-hop flavors, dripping surface colors, and reflective subdued radiance.
“Posture” shimmers on drawling colors topped by Eiffe’s initially almost robotic tones, and then segues to a simple rhythmic pulse, as oozing synths leak into the harmonic stream. When Eiffe’s voice assumes definition, his rapping flow suffuses the tune with body-hugging rhymes.
Uwmami’s production embraces what I call raw industrial hip-hop flavors, dripping surface colors, and reflective subdued radiance. It’s a nuanced sound, full of sonic restraint and delicate tonal allusions, gliding on gracious metallic undertones. Numerous axes run through her harmonic arrangements, cultivating pressurized verve, avoiding the dreary flatness now pervading much of hip-hop. It’s sui generis sound, totally non-derivative.
Of the three tracks dropped so far, my personal favorite is “9254 Dreamers,” because of its elusive shades of creamy R&B relishes and Aaron Everything’s delectable skintight timbres.
Once again, Uwmami confirms her magic sonic touch, producing confections not only hypnotic, but bedizened by sumptuous visceral energy.
