Bryony Williams - State I'm In
Recently signed to Beth Shalom Records, dream-pop/indie-pop singer-songwriter Bryony Williams will release her third EP, State I’m In, on October 30.

Writing about the EP’s first single, “I Can Be,” Bill Cummings of God Is In The TV, penned, “Showing off a new-found self-confidence and boldness ‘I Can Be’ neatly balances effortless fuzz box guitars and bass lines, and a hypnotic backbeat. With Williams’s empowering narrative about growth, inner strength, and capturing moments of joy, it’s damn hooky and catchy too.”
According to her Bandcamp page, “In recent years Bryony has been championed by BBC Introducing, with making her 2019 single, ‘Little Tree,’ BBC West Midlands' Track of the Month, along with support from Tom Robinson on Radio 6, and performing on various Introducing stages at festivals (The Legitimate Peaky Blinders Festival, Camper Calling).”
A few days ago, she released the second single, “Knockin’,” from the EP. Bryony commented on the song via Facebook, “This track is basically a big F*** YOU! to depression and I hope it helps.”
Along with Jess Webberley, Bryony co-founded Grrrl Groannn, a music collective “dedicated to the representation of (indie) womxn to help combat gender inequality in the music industry.” The collective publishes a magazine of the same title, which sold out rapidly.
“Knockin’” opens on distorted synths topped by a dirty, jangle-like guitar. The rhythm, tasty and teeter-tottering, infuse the tune with a grungy cadence, raw and alluring. Bryony’s voice invokes risky flavor, a bit ominous and menacing – visceral femme fatale timbres.
“I Can Be” dishes out velvety, hazy, jangle-filled tints of color, low-slung and dreamy, reflecting Bryony’s haunting tones. The harmonics build slowly, giving the tune a R.E.M. feel, but more wistful and imminent.
Both tracks are superb, allowing Bryony Williams to display her enormous talent and beguiling siren-like vocal ability.
