TREVOR DRURY RELEASES HAUNTING ‘CHAPTER 4’
Alt-pop singer-songwriter Trevor Drury released his latest single, “Chapter 4,” only moments ago. “Chapter 4” is from his forthcoming EP, Alice, It’s All In Your Head.
The song articulates the exquisitely complex emotions surrounding the cessation of a romantic liaison. Yet even as one chapter ends, another may open.
Drury explains “Chapter 4, “I am a big fan of sounds that have movement to them and records that evolve and tell a story. I don’t like creating generic pop stuff, and feel bored with the idea of doing that. If I hear a pop song, even if it’s a big hit, I’ll think what if they had made it bigger and added a choir or took their vocal and crunched it into guitar grittiness. These things jump out at me as a way to make the song cooler and more interesting.”
Originally from Tucson, Drury grew up in San Diego, where he began piano at the age of eight. Later, he studied at San Diego State, and then moved across the continental US to New York City to begin his international modeling career, working with haute couture designers such as Hermes, Robert Geller, Malan Breton, Tom Ford, Timo Weiland, and Mac Cosmetics. Repped by crème de la crème agencies, he appeared in Details Magazine, while traveling the globe. Through it all, he kept working on his music.
Eventually, Drury realigned his priorities and focused on music, studying vocal performance at BIMM. In 2016, he released his debut album, The Start, followed by a series of sublimely beautiful tracks: “I Know You From the 70’s,” “Jealousy,” “Snow Nights,” “Trip to the Water,” and “Head on the Tracks,” which premiered in the UK on Clash Magazine. He also shared the stage with RaminKarimloo, on tour in Europe and Japan.
“Chapter 4” opens on sparkling oscillating colors, followed by Drury’s dulcet melancholic voice.
Since hooking up with Grammy winning producer and songwriter Marc Swersky, Drury’s music has donned nonpareil height and depth. According to Drury, “I don’t think the songs would sound anywhere as powerful and impactful as they do without Marc. A great producer is one who knows how to reach into you as an artist and pull out the essence of your idea.”
“Chapter 4” opens on sparkling oscillating colors, followed by Drury’s dulcet melancholic voice. Then the melody swells and flows into delicious dream-pop flavors amalgamated with alt-pop savors, with hints of retro aromas. A glimmering breakdown presages layers of silky sonic hues, glowing atop streaming filaments.
A gorgeous piano juxtaposes against the cashmere harmonic textures, as softly radiating harmonies infuse the lyrics with suffusing colors, accentuating Drury’s gliding timbres, as he delivers the touching lyrics.
“This chapter’s closing / Oh, it’s closing / But it’s been my favorite book I’ve read in a while / Never thought that I be part of your story / I made a mistake / Went too far ahead / I know it’s just a view / Cause it’s me and you / Know it’s just a few pages left.”
“Chapter 4” is wondrously wrought, full of surging washes of color, an undeniable rhythm, and the hypnotically compelling voice of Trevor Drury.
