TOOPOOR DROPS ‘LAMENTED’
Punk-pop artist TOOPOOR recently released a new music video for “Lamented.” The video, directed by Gilbert Trejo and co-starring TOOPOOR’s boyfriend/producer Killstation, relates a dark quixotic saga of heartache set amidst a cemetery and a decomposing desiccated heart.
TOOPOOR, aka Layla Shapiro, initially established herself as an Instagram influencer, amassing more than 568,000 followers. Her DePop fans flocked to her L.A. underground shop, called Shop Too Poor, and she was showcased in Galore, Bullet Magazine, The Cobra Shop, and Complex.
A natural creative, TOOPOOR resolved to penetrate the realm of music, releasing her debut single, “Crazy Girls,” accumulating more than 2 million streams, while the song’s video accrued 777,000 views on YouTube.
TOOPOOR explains her move into music, saying, “I wanted to start writing/singing to leave something on earth that would live forever. I wanted to share a part of me that would never die.”
The fanciful eccentric images make it hard to look away, compelling viewers to watch.
“Lamented” opens on measured dark tones atop a trap-beat attended by a subterranean bass line. Oscillating filtered vocal harmonies infuse the harmonics with austere, isolated timbres, oozing with metallic aromas.
TOOPOOR’s moody voice imbues the lyrics with nostalgic elegiac hues, suffusing the tune with a plaintive lullaby feel, like ozone smelling mists rife with residual energy.
“I’ve been waiting for too long / I’d never leave but now you’re gone / Complicated / I might not make it / I’ll hold your heart till the day I break it.”
The video, shot in black and white, presents surreal visuals of bleak gloom and a lip-syncing body being dragged through a field, while cutting to an elusive male figure in process of departing. The fanciful eccentric images make it hard to look away, compelling viewers to watch.
“Lamented” is brilliantly wrought, full of opaque drifting colors, a dynamic trap groove, and the ghostly gorgeous voice of TOOPOOR.
