Seattle’s scorching rock outfit Thunderpussy just released their cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love.”
Thunderpussy is made up of Molly Sides (vocals), Whitney Petty (guitar), Leah Julius (bass), and Ruby Dunphy (drums). The band’s genesis occurred in 2013, when Petty and Sides were in Seattle, where Petty was working on a boat, while playing with The Grizzled Mighty and Deerhunter. Meanwhile, Sides was studying dance at Cornish College of the Arts.
After watching Sides perform with This Bitch Don’t Fall Off, Petty decided to put together Thunderpussy in 2015. They added Lena Simon on drums and Julius on bass. Later, Simon bailed to play bass for La Luz and was replaced by Dunphy. Supposedly Dunphy left the band at the beginning of 2019. There’s no record of who replaced her.
Thunderpussy dropped their debut EP, Greatest Tits, in 2018, followed by their self-titled debut album three months later. According to the band, their musical influences include Led Zeppelin, Kathleen Hanna, The Marshall Tucker Band, Laura Jane Grace, and Heart. Petty once said their shows are like “Beyonce meets Led Zeppelin.”
“Somebody to Love” opens on Sides’ wickedly potent voice, followed by brawny guitars and hammer of the Gods percussion.
In short, Thunderpussy kicks ass and does it with attitude and without apology. Julius pretty much summed it up, when she said, "All four of us women do things that have historically been male-dominated. We play music, ride motorcycles, date girls, and lift heavy shit for a living. And we don't do them as a 'fuck you' to the male-dominated society, or in an attempt to advance women's rights, we do them because we can and want to."
“Somebody to Love” opens on Sides’ wickedly potent voice, followed by brawny guitars and hammer of the Gods percussion. I love the rasping vibrato in Sides’ tones, giving the lyrics searing femme fatale savors. Full of round –flavored tom toms, the drums infuse the tune with muscular walloping punch. On the solo section, the harmonics achieve a grand wall-of-sound effect, as Petty struts her licks on her axe.
This is a stellar cover of one of rock’s iconic songs. Thunderpussy hits it hard and lays it down with savage gusto.
