Those Without - Neon Minds

Örebro, Sweden pop-punk outfit Those Without dropped a new EP, Neon Minds, not long ago.

Made up of Dennis Thunell Karabegovic (drums), Filip Burman (bass), Felix Lindquist (guitar), Martin Spåman (guitar), and Oskar Ögren (vocals), Those Without’s sound blends roiling guitars, hefty percussion, and melodic pop-punk savors into potent concoctions of music.

Encompassing four-tracks, Neon Minds starts off with “Took Your Chance,” opening on gleaming surges of searing guitars riding a massively Jovian rhythm fueled by Burman’s throbbing bassline and Karabegovic’s crunching drums. Ögren’s tight, resonant voice fills the lyrics with delicious sonic hues, tension-filled and powerfully alluring. An acoustic breakdown shifts the harmonics from brawny to almost elegant, and the ramps back up.

“The Thin Line Between Hope & Despair” travels on prickly metallic guitars full of teeter-tottering textures, as Ögren’s dulcet tones vary from tender smoothness to rasping ferocity, infusing the lyrics with urgency. I love the drums on this track, raw and popping with brilliant energy, and a Thor-like kick drum. Scrumptious vocal harmonies give the song scope and depth.

However, if it’s any indication of the quality of the rest of the album, this could be a must-listen-to and own release.

“Bubblegum” rolls on strapping guitars chockfull of dark glistening hues, as the rhythm gushes with robust pulsations. “Seattle” takes things down a couple of notches, featuring jangly-lite guitars and Ögren’s quixotic-laced tones. Suffused with gentle colors, this is a beautiful track, slow and velvety.

Elle Xvii - Hello, Mom

Pennsylvania pop-punk artist Toni (Elaine), aka “Elle Xvii,” will drop her new full-length album, Hello, Mom, on April 22. Only one track, “Andre Jack Nickel Bone,” is available right now on Bandcamp. However, if it’s any indication of the quality of the rest of the album, this could be a must-listen-to and own release.

Opening on low-slung guitars, “Andre Jack Nickel Bone” kicks into overdrive when the harmonics mousse up, supported by light, crisp drums, as Elle Xvii’s delectably flavored voice infuses the lyrics with surf-punk hues, both bewitching and easy on the ears.

“I play guitar only on Sunday nights when I’m feeling alone and I’m feeling a vibe.”
