The Very Very Boom! - Can't Break Me

Pop-punk outfit The Very Very Boom! just dropped a new EP, called Can’t Break Me.

The Very Very Boom!

The Very Very Boom!

Hailing from the petrochemical wasteland of Beaumont, Texas, the band formed in 2018, and began life as a collaborative effort between Yancey Head (vocals, guitar) and Mike Miguez (drums). Later, with the addition of Meredith McMurray (bass), the band started performing live shows, followed by recording.

The band’s pop-punk sound radiates galvanizing energy riding simple infectious melodies.

Recorded at the Blasting Room in Ft. Collins, Colorado, the EP comprises seven tracks, beginning with the title track, which opens on a growling riff followed by the entry of the rhythm section, bass and drums. Head’s guitar snarls with electrifying dirty energy, as Miguez wallops the drums, injecting tasty round tones on the tom-toms.

The best tracks on the album include “Happiness,” traveling on a straightforward pummeling beat, as Head’s easy-to-listen-to voice infuses the tune with skater grrrl-lite flavors. “July” opens on darker hues flowing into a tight, contagious melody full of muscular momentum and Head’s surging guitar. When the harmonic force drops off, the tune takes on a delicious stuttering energy.

Frankly, all the tracks on the EP discharge raw punk energy on unpretentious melodies stripped down to the basics, guitar, bass, and drums.

What’s unique and alluring about The Very Very Boom! Is the yummy vocal harmonies provided by the luminous sheen of sound from the blending of McMurray’s and Head’s voices.

“El Duce” opens on grimacing guitar chords and a vicious snare roll. The harmonics rumble and undulate with ferocious energy, and then drop down to a stellar bass split that slowly ramps up as Head’s thrumming guitar swells with oomph.

“Goodbye” features Head’s muddy guitar emanating nuclear-powered sonic waves, as McMurray’s bass holds the bottom down like an anvil. Head’s voice exudes scrumptious good riddance tones projecting an f-you attitude that’s wonderfully entertaining.

Frankly, all the tracks on the EP discharge raw punk energy on unpretentious melodies stripped down to the basics, guitar, bass, and drums. Yet the music’s minimalism packs a grand sonic impact, giving the songs thick, brawny get-up-and-go. And Head’s voice is just about right, always.

With Can’t Break Me, The Very Very Boom! exhibit the penetrating punch of punk music unencumbered by brazen displays of showiness.
