From Wittibreut, Bayern, Germany, punk rock outfit The Special Bombs recently released a new LP, entitled Eruptions. Recorded by Winston Jud and Ramon Bachmeier at Sound Fux Studio in Altotting, Germany, the album was mixed by Benedikt Hain at Outback Recording, assisted by Thomas Krottenthaler, and mastered by Philipp Welsing.
The cover art for the album, which is totally cool, is by Stefan Beham.
According to their Facebook page, “When you listen to the explosive punk rock of ‘The Special Bombs’ you would rather expect the four guys to come from Gainesville or Sweden instead of Lower Bavaria. You will also quickly realize that they not only make music since they were founded in 2017 but that they all had plenty of musical experience before that. The result is exciting, melodic punk rock with lots of power, hence the perfect sound for energetic live shows, where no foot will remain calm and no voice will remain silent...”
And they’re right. The Special Bombs lay it down with gusto and high-octane energy.
The Special Bombs have it going on!
The band is made up of Bernie Loher (bass), Chris Steßl (guitar), Mandal Bärlehner (drums), and Stephan Lirk (guitar, vocals).
With 10-tracks, the album commences with “My Eruption,” opening on searing, snarling guitars pumping out beaucoup relentless metallic colors flowing into a driving beat. Lirk’s voice delivers just the right amount of rasping melodicism, infusing the lyrics with tight, defiant tones, as punchy harmonies fill in the empty sonic spaces.
Entry points, from a purely subjective viewpoint, include “Still Dreaming,” with a cool snare roll intro, followed by surging guitars shimmering with percolating hues and brawny textures. “Swim Upstream” rides a crunching rhythm seguing to growling guitars and soaring harmonies.
“Not Too Old” rolls out on a sublime sizzling snare, followed by blistering guitars topped by Lirk’s deliciously scratchy tones, on the brink of screaming fulminations, but still under delightful control. Don’t miss the last track, “The Night,” traveling on a tasty rumbling groove and scowling guitars.
The Special Bombs have it going on! This band pushes out hardcore punk flavored with hints of pop-punk and muscular textures of sonic oomph.
