SUN & FLESH LIGHT IT UP ON ‘DIG IN DEEP’
Brooklyn hard rock outfit Sun & Flesh recently unveiled the music video for “Dig In Deep,” featuring elements of Seattle grunge, metal, and alt-rock, along with hints of down-and-dirty sludge.
Made up of Christoph Manuel (vocals, guitar), Stefan Reinberger (guitar), Matt Brewster (bass), and Jonathan Serwinowski (drums), the band’s dominating sound has achieved innovative heft and force since hooking up with producer Dan Korneff, who has worked with luminaries such as Breaking Benjamin, Paramore, and Papa Roach.
Korneff took the band’s sound, with its interweaving layers of light and dark, and burnished it to a lustrous sheen, injecting their music with volatility and edginess on the brink of dangerous-to-listen-to. As Korneff says, "The reason why I developed an early interest in this band is because the songs were so good. I can’t wait for people to hear what I hear."
Referring to their music as “blistering anthems for the disenchanted,” Sun & Flesh melds textures both unadulterated and grimy with muddy granularity, shifting from smooth and pure to brawny and menacing. Juxtaposing those textures demands a nonpareil ear for tone and rhythm.
This band hits like Thor’s hammer – Mjolnir.
Sun & Flesh’s previous releases, like “Heaven,” which landed them on Metal Injection, and “I Don’t Care,” a crushing song of massive authority, put them on the map. “Dig In Deep” makes them a focal point, one not to be missed.
“Dig In Deep” opens on metalcore coloration riding the finessed Jovian drumming of Serwinowski and Brewster’s fat vibrating bassline. A pummeling breakdown, full of shimmering effects, transitions to a wickedly searing guitar.
Radiant backing vocals infuse Manuel’s ferocious lead vocals with auras of sonic luminosity, giving the vocals tight insistent flavors.
The video, directed by Brewster and Manuel, is shot in black and white, with interspersed full color, giving the visuals the hard-hitting impact of Ridley Scott, as visceral images shift and tumble in a brutal relationship as if filmed deep in the bowels of hell.
“Dig In Deep” puts on display the galvanizing dynamics of Sun & Flesh, combining soft, almost ethereal tones, with steroidal muscularity. This band hits like Thor’s hammer – Mjolnir.
