The Melbourne trio is made up of Acacia (she/her) on guitar, lead vocals; Scout (they/them) on drums, backing vocals; and Caitlyn (she/her) on bass. The band’s sound is feisty, hits hard, and shifts from tasty melodicism to hefty flaying sonic pressure.

Slush sings “about the wonders of menstrual cups or the shit fuckboys say.” In other words, Slush is a live wire. In an interview with Pile Rats, the band expounded on their music, “We’re talkin’ like feminist punk ditties that’re quite sweet and poppy, but also super screamy and angry at times (particularly the songs about menstruation, fuckboys and Bono). Scout loves drum fills, Caitlyn likes having her bass loud, and Acacia’s all about those power chords.”

Originally from the Mid-North Coast of NSW, the trio hooked up in high school and, later, made the move to the dynamic music scene in Melbourne, where they’ve been tearing it up with their cruelly superior sound. Last year they played all over Melbourne, and shared the stage with Moaning Lisa and FRITZ.

The tempo accelerates, taking on wall-of-sound oomph while still maintaining the sparkle of pop that makes the tune so irresistibly fun.

Slush contains five tracks, two of which are currently available for your ears on Bandcamp – “Keep Cup” and “Middle Name.”

“Keep Cup” opens on gleaming guitar riffs and delicious vocal harmonies infused with pop flavors, and then ramps up to pop-punk energy on Acacia’s surging, growling-lite guitar. I love the dirty hues emanating from her axe. The tempo accelerates, taking on wall-of-sound oomph while still maintaining the sparkle of pop that makes the tune so irresistibly fun.

“Middle Name” features aggressive punk impetus laced with pop savors. Acacia’s guitar is tighter on this track, less rough and grungy, but sizzles with punk impudence. Scout’s muscular pummeling on the skins meshes just right with Caitlyn’s fat bass line, giving the tune muscular rhythm. The band’s vocal harmonies integrate scrumptious tonal surfaces, setting them apart from most pop-punk bands’ curious lack thereof.

Slush delivers raw sonic textures, skintight grab-you-by-the-throat rhythms, and the delectably pleasurable impact of vocal harmonies. Aussie punk has it going on!
