Toronto alt-rocker Skye Wallace just dropped the music video for “Body Lights The Way,” a song from her recently released self-titled LP.

According to Wallace, “’Body Lights The Way’ is inspired by a story I read of a sex worker during the Dawson City Gold Rush. At the time, I was staying there for a songwriting residency. Her badass tale inspired me to take that fire, that fuel and put it into song. I want you to feel a sense of shiny empowerment when you listen, along with a groove that will hopefully spark you to have a really good day!”
The video, directed and edited by Dan Sokolowski, was filmed by Sokolowki and Nicholas Marinelli in the Yukon and Whitby, Ontario at a local ice rink, where shots of the band playing their instruments in the middle of the rink are interspersed with shots of curlers pushing big rocks up and down the ice. Wallace grew up participating in curling, which holds a special place in her heart.
When the snarling guitar solo jumps in with blistering licks, the song grimaces with energy.
“Body Lights The Way” opens on a tasty drum fill rolling into slightly off-kilter guitar riffs, infusing the tune with edgy colors and serrated luminous tones. A fat bassline rumbles of vibrating slaps, holding the rhythm down, as delightful “ooh, ooh, oohs” float overhead.
When Wallace’s ragged-lite deliciously evocative voice takes off, the tune takes on proximate imminence and tight flavors. Nuanced inflections, high, burping, and glistening, give her voice tantalizing surface timbres.
“I’m ready, and you’re too kind / I’m the canary and I’m in your mine / My body lights the way in your lack of thrill and mine / I’ll be good if you stake your claim / And my looks are the same.”
A chop-stick-like piano imbues the tune with gleaming sparkles, adding another vibrant layer of color to the harmonics. When the snarling guitar solo jumps in with blistering licks, the song grimaces with energy.
With “Body Lights The Way,” Skye Wallace delivers visceral dynamics traveling on great alt-rock discharges of prickly sounds.
