Say Never is an alt-rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. The band just released the music video for “Giving Up,” a song “that anyone who's been in a toxic relationship can easily relate to; it's about that moment when you have decided to completely close the chapter on that situation and focus on happiness for yourself moving forward.”
Formed in 2010, Say Never is made up of Jonathan Pruitt (guitar, vocals), Paul Lawrence (bass), Rick Gatheman (drums), and Ben Sumpter (lead guitar). The band’s sound combines rock, grunge, hints of country, and metal into potent music.
“Giving Up” opens on buff, dirty guitars backed by a tight wailing accent, and then flows into a grunge-flavored tune with tangs of metal surging through it. Full of dark colors, the guitars rumble with bleak, almost doom-like, tones atop a muscular rhythm.
The rest of band ain’t shabby, either. They’re tight and hold it down with style and beau coup punch. Would some label please sign this band?!
A monster guitar solo, muddy and reverb-heavy infuses the tune with electrifying discharges. Pruitt’s deep, ragged tenor reflects aching colors of emotional angst. It’s a brawny voice, distinctive because it doesn’t remind you of anyone you’ve heard before, which makes it special.
The lyrics are real, exposing authentic feelings devoid of any subterfuge or self-consciousness.
“I feel like giving up today / And nothings ever gonna change / Cause there is something wrong with me / And I am constantly in pain / I feel like I'm dying.”
The video is totally lit! The best part is the spray from Gatheman’s drums, as he pummels the snare. I don’t know if it’s simply special effects or whether he sacrificed his drums to the god of Misty Spray, but the end product is effective as all get-out. And I like the way he hits the skins and uses his cymbals; he’s got a nice touch, raw and powerful, but the sticks flow with elegance.

“Giving Up” hits hard and doesn’t let up. Say Never most assuredly has it going on. They know how to wind it up and turn it loose.
