RYAN HERRICK RELEASES ‘HEAL YOUR BONES’ EP AND PREMIERES ‘HOLDIN’ ON’
Chicago-based singer-songwriter Ryan Herrick releases his new EP, Heal Your Bones, and debuts “Holdin’ On” on Rawckus Magazine.
According to Ryan, "Heal Your Bones is a collection of songs centered around the hero's journey, a universal archetype written about by the likes of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung. The songs emerge from a psycho-spiritual perspective of being human: the quest for healing; the value of knowing your roots; memory, aging, death and dying; and the journey home.”
Working with John Abbey, Marcus Newman, and Joel Mongeon, Ryan brought life to Heal Your Bones.
Ryan’s distinctive sound, inspired by Delta blues, Appalachian folk music, rock, Celtic, and Indian raga, reflects his spiritual nucleus, the correlation of all things, and his allegiance to human accord. Akin to a modern day hybrid of Thomas Merton and Antonio Vivaldi, Ryan’s music expresses his transcendent message, both soothing and elevating.
Explaining, Ryan says, "It's hard not to speak of one's spiritual beliefs without sounding pretentious... but everything I do, every direction I take is in service of the divine spark I see in all of humanity."
There’s a magnetic captivating quality to this song, simultaneously luxuriant and visceral, resulting in primal allure.
Along with performing at celebrate venues such as the Cubby Bear, the Riviera, and House of Blues, Ryan has shared the stage with Garbage, Eagles of Death Metal, members of Bush, and Filter’s Richard Patrick. In February 2020, Sony/The Orchard will release Ryan’s roots-rock outfit The JAB’s LP, Consume.
Heal Your Bones comprises four-tracks, beginning with the title track, which opens on a strumming folk-flavored guitar flowing into an alt-rock-tinged melody emanating moody energy, as hefty guitars surge on potent savors topped by gleaming accents. Full of dark palpable textures, the tune delivers tight nuances of suggestive urgency.
“Wild Mountain Thyme” travels on Ryan’s evocative voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar. As syncopated percussion enters, the folk tune takes on a gorgeous Celtic ambiance, infusing the music with suffused textures and emotional commitment.
“Holdin’ On” rides light emerging tones, soft and tender, as Ryan’s rich warm tones cap the melody with infectious timbres, vaguely reminiscent of Dan Fogelberg, only more unrestrained, redolent with tantalizing savors. The blend of an oozing organ and luminous guitar licks infuses the tune with scrumptious surfaces.
“Tumbleweed (Take Me Home)” rides a potent folk melody flavored with Pearl Jam-like grunge aromas. On this track, Ryan’s voice exudes delicious angular timbres, at once rasping, reedy-lite, and melodic. There’s a magnetic captivating quality to this song, simultaneously luxuriant and visceral, resulting in primal allure.
Heal Your Bones discharges tangible dynamism, at times elegant, at other times muscular, but always compelling and mesmerizing.
