Here's a list of new singles, EPs, and albums I recently discovered while diving through Bandcamp's 'New Arrivals.' All of them fit into the dream-pop genre, yet display the vast variety of flavors inherent in the designation. Hopefully, you like at least one or two of them. Most are what I call "tasty music."
Dark Water – Night Ghosts
Dream-pop outfit Dark Water, hailing from Charlotte, NC, dropped a new album at the end of July. It’s called Night Ghosts. Tracks to take note of include: “Magic Candy,” “Car,” and “Augustine.” Sadly, there is no information on the band on Bandcamp, and Googling them proved to be fugitive. Still, I love the lead vocals on this album, velvety textures rife with ethereal tones, as well a luscious projection.
Whitelands – “Paradise is a person”
This excellent track is from Whiteland’s forthcoming album, Compilation, which encompassed previously released tracks, a kind of ‘best of aggregation.’ Compilation is slated to drop August 30, via Hidden Bay Records. Whiteland’s, a dream-pop/shoegaze band from France, is made up of Etienne and Jagun, who have beau coup talent.
Rosie Ugly – Bad Dog EP
Straight outta’ Portland, Oregon comes Rosie Ugly, another band/solo artist about whom there is no gen. But hey, the music is great, delivering sublime dream-pop flavors, along with scrumptiously creamy vocals, smooth and silky and nuanced. In fact, on “II,” the vocals conjure up the sophisti-pop sound of Sade.
Duijns describes his sound as “garden/dream-pop, calling to mind a bittersweet beach serenade.”
Pale Puma – “Strangers/Solid Gold”
This double single dropped July 25, and is the work of Django Duijns, who hails from Amsterdam. Duijns describes his sound as “garden/dream-pop, calling to mind a bittersweet beach serenade.”
Arch of Love – “Say”
Out of Philly, Arch of Love is a duo made up of Chelsea Brennan (vocals, synths) and Chris Schackerman (guitar, drum programming). Their sound blends ‘80s new wave and modern electro-synth music into spellbindingly beautiful music.
Horse Girl – How To Draw Animals EP
Denver’s Horse Girl, a dream-pop duo, dropped How To Draw Animals July 21. Made up of Laura (vocals) and Kyle (samples, keys, bass, programming), their sound features cool persuasive dream-pop colors with hints of industrial new wave, just enough to make it interesting.
Tinkerwendy – Look A Bird In The Eye
Look A Bird In The Eye is the debut album from Tinkerwendy, aka Ruth Wickenberg, who amalgamates tinctures of folk, dream-pop, and even tints of country into wonderfully evocative music. Tinkerwendy’s musical mission is “making love cool again.”
