Montreal’s urban electronic/hip-hop outfit, known as Ragers, recently released a new single, “Zac.”
According to Ragers, “’ZAC’ is the internet. Impossible to listen to just once and walk away. All the memes, narcissism, vacuous self-promotion and Insta-fame rolled up into a two-minute stomper that screams REPEAT! Strip off the sheen and listen to a snapshot of modern life put to music.”
Formed in 2014, Ragers cultivates a mysterious aura, speaking through their music and eschewing any type of personality cult posture. However, some information about the band is available, like they began life as a punk band, but shifted to hip-hop/electronic music. Once upon a time, a recording deal with Universal went south because of dubious management. Since then, Ragers is all about doing it their way on their terms.
With a buoyant mood and feel, the harmonics deliver cool flavors, stylish and nuanced with flamboyant hues and droning synths.
Although Montreal is home, the band spends a lot of time in L.A., where the music scene is more conducive in every way possible to turning out tasty productions, and playing with the crème de la crème of musicians.
The video for “Zac,” directed Xavier Cantin-Lemieux, projects a nonchalant, high school vibe, wherein a group workouts at the gym, goes to the driving range, eats stacks of pancakes at IHOP, and has fun. Cuts of the band performing live give the visuals a frenetic energy, as that’s when the guys are working rather than fooling around. The best shot in the video is when one the band is sitting on the curb holding his cat, while giving himself a haircut.
“Zac” opens on a deep, thrumming bass line and tight groove. The melody blends electronic textures, a low-slung trap beat, and radiant falsettos accompanied by tighter rapping tones. With a buoyant mood and feel, the harmonics deliver cool flavors, stylish and nuanced with flamboyant hues and droning synths.
“Zac” amalgamates pop hip-hop with synth washes of alt-rock. The result is contagiously tantalizing, as well as full of galvanizing momentum.
