Originally from Sandpoint, Idaho, she moved to Ireland in 2016 to immerse herself in the music of her ancestors. While there, like a caterpillar emerging as a butterfly, she sloughed off her fears, doubt, and self-judgment, learning how to get out of her own way. Along with creating her sound, she fell in love and became part of a community of exceptional weirdos.

The genesis of “Throw Me In” occurred during her stint at University, when she felt vulnerable and alone. That’s when she met Jack Kelly, a local jazz musician.

According to Maya, “I want to describe the years I spent with Jack in order to voice the impact he had on my heart and music, but I’m afraid words would only scathe the surface of our love’s depth.”

The highlight of the track is Queen Bonobo’s lilting voice, under luscious control, infusing the lyrics with crystalline, dynamic timbres.

Because she couldn’t get another visa to remain in Ireland, Maya elected to record her EP, laying down the tracks the week before she left. The EP shows the evolution of her sound since recording her debut LP, Light Shadow Boom Boom. Each of the songs on Sail From This Life narrates the discomfort of transformation, as well as the liberation inherent in "getting outside of yourself.”

The EP features the talents of Jack Charles Kelly (double bassist, co-producer), Andrew McCoubrey (drums, percussion, co-producer, mixing), James Anderson (drums, percussion), Joleen McClaughlin (harp), Neil Burns (Rhodes), Peter Baldwin (sound engineer), and Fergal Davis (mastering).

“Throw Me In” opens on a light acoustic guitar topped by Queen Bonobo’s inimitably inflected voice, rich and edgy. Sparkling chimes add bright accents, while a syncopated rhythm provides an eccentric yet delicious cadence.

On “Throw Me In,” Queen Bonobo exhibits innovative harmonic textures, trembling and hoary, as well as her distinctive vocals.
