Get ready for another outing from the gloomy post-punk outpost that is Protomartyr. The quartet has announced a brand-new EP called Consolation, because of course it is, which will be released on June 15 via Domino Records.
This will be their second release with the label after 2017's Relatives in Descent. Prior to that, they dropped two albums with Hardly Art, including the highly-acclaimed The Agent Intellect in 2015. They also put out a debut album with Urinal Cake Records, which I only mention because they are a local Detroit label, and I am a local Detroit writer.
Given Protomartyr's origins in the Motor City, I've always wanted to be more enthusiastic for them than I am. However, while I like the band just fine, and have really enjoyed a few songs, their music has never completely connected with me.
Don't be mad at me just because Mark E. Smith is no longer with us.
Then again, considering that they are often compared to the Fall, maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Sorry to all you the Fall fans out there. Don't be mad at me just because Mark E. Smith is no longer with us.
If you are looking for something in that post-punk vibe, though, and like a deep, sonorous voice, then Protomartyr could be the band for you. They released a video for their first single, "Wheel of Fortune," which features Kelley Deal, best known for her work in The Breeders. She also appears on another track from the EP called "You Win Again."
Time to get bummed out.
