PREMIERE | LEXXICON SEARCHES FOR ‘PARADISE’
Toronto-based R&B/dancehall artist Lexxicon introduces the music video for “Paradise,” his latest single, taken from his EP, Tropical R&B, blending the cool savors of Jamaica with alt-pop, Afrobeats, and hip-hop.
Explaining the EP, Lexxicon shares, “The theme for the EP is escape, but, despite trying to runway, we always take our human nature with us which eventually leads to the same feelings of isolation and pain. We must learn to live with pain and love simultaneously.”
Written during quarantine, the EP probes the accompanying isolation and loneliness he experienced during the lockdown. Using the expressive textures of R&B, he discovered the perfect sonic vehicle to convey his feelings.
Influenced by songwriter-producers such as Max Martin and Ester Dean, along with artists like Sean Paul, Rihanna, Stefflon Don, Tory Lanez, and Burna Boy, Lexxicon’s sound has been likened to a fusion of PartyNextDoor and Swae Lee.
Prior releases via Tropicon Islands Entertainment include his debut EP, Solar Flare, followed by two vibrant albums, Bashment Reggaeton and Bashment Trap House. Lexxicon has performed at Afro Fest, Kothu Fest, Canadian Music Week, Manifesto, Canada Day, T-Dot Fest, and Culture Shock Block Party, along with features on CBC Radio, We Love Hip Hop, and New Theory Radio, among a host of others.
The juxtaposition of the potent rhythmic throb against graceful swirling hues infuses the music with plush duality.
Focusing on “Paradise,” Lexxicon says, “All the constant videos of black deaths on social media have been extremely overwhelming. With this song, I’m expressing the need to find somewhere safe to escape to—the lyric ‘Been looking for paradise’ reflects that finding a place to belong takes time, but it’s worth the search.”
“Paradise” opens on oozing, emerging synths, followed by the entry of Lexxicon’s velvety, rich voice, low and mellow. A thumping kick-drum provides the rhythmic pulse, as tantalizing, elusive sonic filaments imbue the tune with the delicate moodiness of melancholic aromas. The juxtaposition of the potent rhythmic throb against graceful swirling hues infuses the music with plush duality.
Lexxicon’s tones range from low-slung and mystified to cogent gleaming urgency, suffusing the lyrics with yearning glosses.
“Been looking for paradise / For some time / Still can't find it / Just shame inside / Been looking for paradise / None in my life / Pain on rewind / No relief in sight.”
With “Paradise,” Lexxicon delivers nuanced evocative R&B riding a muscular rhythm as his stylish voice glides overhead. Lexxicon definitely has it going on!
