Toronto, Ontario glittery power pop outfit Pony recently released a new single/music video, entitled “Limerence.”
Limerence is a psychological term. According to the Oxford Dictionary, limerence is defined: “The state of being infatuated or obsessed with another person, typically experienced involuntarily and characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings but not primarily for a sexual relationship.”
Pony expands on the definition, explaining, “The song is inspired by the all-consuming/crushing feeling you get when you initially feel drawn to another person. It feels like there are butterflies in your stomach made of razor blades. It's simultaneously amazing and awful when you feel powerful yet vulnerable, and wondering if your feelings are reciprocated can be actual torture.”
Made up of Sam Bielanski and friends, “Limerence” was written by Bielanski, mixed by Michael Butler, mastered by James Plotkin, with album art by Sarah Bauman.
Definitely one of the better songs this year.
“Limerence” opens on grungy potent guitars riding a rolling, undulating rhythm rife with new wave pop energy. Bielanski’s voice, sweetly melodic yet deliciously penetrating, infuses the lyrics with creamy dreamy textures and tantalizing timbres.
“At times I feel so insecure / but I don’t want to show you / you’re funny and you makes me laugh / do you think that I am funny too / lock eyes, pretend it doesn’t make me feel so shy / I feel nervous is there somewhere I can hide?”
On the chorus, gentle gleaming vocal harmonies inject the tune with radiant depth and luminous dimension, adding longing flavors. I love the jangly guitar inflections, imbuing the harmonics with CSN&Y savors.
The harmonic flow, along with Bielanski’s silky tones, suffuses this song with a layered, oozing, gleaming stream of intoxicating colors, chockfull of delectably charming gritty/jangly guitars emitting infectious palpable pressure.
“Limerence” is superb, one of those songs that worms its way into your ears, initiating an intractable desire to listen to it over and over. Definitely one of the better songs this year.
