“Half of Me” is the latest single from Irish MC Pat Lagoon. Over the past year, Lagoon has dropped two EPs along with a bevy of singles.
His talent and diverse style, ranging from the pop-flavored ambiance found on the Agua Sippin EP to the edgy essence of the Recess EP, conjure up elusive whiffs of Travis Scott. Lagoon’s supple sound works well with collaborators like RikShaw and Paye Fox, whether on low-slung bangers, emo savors, trap beats, or boom bap.
Although born in Nigeria, Lagoon grew up in Ireland, initially in Tramore, and then in the old city of Waterford, located in southeastern Ireland. He’s been making music since 2016, releasing his joints primarily via SoundCloud.
Word in Ireland is that studio time is outrageously expensive so many artists are either left hanging out to dry, or have to explore other options. Not one to be easily dissuaded, Lagoon used his bedroom as his studio, becoming what is known as a “bedroom artist,” aka “boudoir baby.” Later, he graduated to a ritzier bedroom studio belonging to fellow Irish rapper Swayde.
Lagoon’s flow shifts between smooth sing-song and a tighter spitting delivery, all while riding laid-back timbres.
Lagoon is an important component in the structure of Irish hip-hop, along with a few others, like Uwmami, Chalyd, and Paye Fox. This singular group is pushing towards an explosive arrival on The Big Stage. They’re on the brink of mega-stardom.
“Half of Me” kicks off with eerie fractal synths and a teeter-tottering syncopated beat. There’s almost a nursery rhyme feel to the chiming colors atop a mid-range bass line, which is a nice change from the current push of stutter-putter melodies afflicting hip-hop.
Lagoon’s flow shifts between smooth sing-song and a tighter spitting delivery, all while riding laid-back timbres. Since “Half of Me” was produced by Tunes on Tick rather than LHK, Lagoon’s usual production boss, the switch in producers may explain the lighter sonic flavor of “Half of Me.”
Whatever the explanation, “Half of Me” demonstrates Lagoon’s openness to swapping out different ingredients. The result is a tasty ear confection.
