Featurette - Million Things

Cool new music for your listening pleasure. The fact that all these artists hail from Canada, the Great White North, is purely happenstance.

Featurette

Toronto-based indie-pop duo Featurette just released a new single/music video, called “Million Things.” I’m not sure whether the song is from Featurette’s forthcoming album, slated to drop late this year, or a standalone single.

Featurette is made up of singer Lexie Jay and drummer Jon Fedorsen.

According to Featurette, “Million Things” is about “the social media driven world we live in, and how it affects our relationships and even mental health. Everyone’s trying to be insta-famous.”

Deanna Petcoff – “Stage Lights”

Another Toronto artist Deanna Petcoff lights it up on “Stage Lights,” her new alt-pop single.

Petcoff grew up listening to David Bowie, Joan Jett, Lou Reed, and Patti Smith. In 2011, she attended Girl’s Rock Camp in Toronto, followed by starting her first band, Pins & Needles, which dissolved last year, which led to Petcoff going solo.

Petcoff explains “Stage Lights,” saying, “I was at a backyard concert in the muggy summer heat – the kind that is charming for the time of year. I had just broken it off with someone, and I was still trying to figure out who I was when I wasn’t with him.”

A friend introduced her to a man. Sparks ignited, but the man was in town for just one night. Later, on her way home, in a dream-like haze, she wrote “Stage Lights.” Her bass guitarist, Dylan Burrett, persuaded her to give the song shape and melodic essence.

Opeongo – “Hopeless”

Opeongo is the musical project of musician Keegan Trumpour, who hails from Ontario. “Hopeless” is off Opeongo’s forthcoming debut LP, entitled Miasma.

“Hopeless” is “a documentation of a feeling than it is a reflection of my true state of being. It’s a reminder to acknowledge that no matter what you have to work through in your life, you’re still here to sing about it.”

I love the bluesy gospel-infused feel of this song, as well as the delicious background vocal harmonies.
