NICK ARNESON: 'GOOD FOR RIGHT NOW'
Portland, Oregon multi-instrumentalist Nick Arneson recently unveiled a new single/music video, entitled “Good For Right Now.”
“Good For Right Now” exposes the prevalent misconception promulgated by the world at large: success and money will make you happy. Arneson disagrees, arguing money and success leave one feeling emptier than before. Without a creative outlet, asserts Arneson, “It’s a spiral of despair, there is no other way to put it… without the outlet the emptiness is painful, physically and emotionally.”
Arneson explains his music, saying, “I’m convinced that I’m not fully in charge of my work, especially on this track and the many others I’ve nearly completed, they seem to come to me in a wild flash. It’s like some higher (smarter) power is handing me a brilliant piece of work, and if I mess with it too much, I just fuck it up. I’m learning to produce the raw idea into a cohesive body, without killing the initial creative spark.”
Originally a drummer, Arneson played with various indie-rock bands in the Portland area. Within the last year, he’s begun releasing his own music, dropping his debut album, MidLifeCrisis, in 2018, followed by 2019’s EP, Restless, the first of a troika of EPs he plans on releasing during the year.
Chock-full of brooding, raw, edgy surface hues, “Good For Right Now” projects a wicked sense of imminence, as if something nastily tight is being figured out.
Arneson’s personal philosophy revolves around discovering one’s raison d'être, embracing it, and participating in it totally. His music mirrors his rationale, exuding innate curiosity about the human condition.
“Good For Right Now” opens on dark, dirty guitars riding a compelling rhythm rife with thrumming indie-rock pulses topped by psychedelic-lite flavors and dreamy, drifting dynamics. Arneson’s deliciously raspy tones infuse the lyrics with pensive stoner-laced textures, making no pretense of stoic resignation to the status quo.
“Something about here / Reminds me / Of how mediocre I've become / I don't wanna know / What fuckin time it is / Don't tell me the odds / Comfort isn't what we need right now / A nice pair of socks / Good job / Smooth haircut / A bunch of proper pushups.”
The video is a trip, shifting from Arneson playing guitar, drums, and singing in a white T-shirt to two figures playing cards: one dressed in a smoking jacket, the other wearing jeans and a flannel shirt topped by a horse’s head mask. When the horse figure loses, he becomes angry, blasting the other figure with an energy beam, vaporizing the winner.
