Indie-rock-pop singer-songwriter Neill Maclean recently released a new single, entitled “Invite Me Over,” giving listeners a foretaste of his forthcoming album Opryland Drive, slated to drop February 7.
Maclean, based in Nashville, has performed in most of NYC’s music venues and toured the East Coast, dishing out his distinctive sound, a blend of new wave, punk, folk, and pop elements. It’s a sound vaguely reminiscent of the Beatles amalgamated with the lo-fi get-up-and-go energy of T-Rex and Vampire Weekend.
Writing and recording with Grammy winners such as The Lumineers, Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant, and Matt Musty of Train, along with a host of others, including numerous rising artists, Maclean has developed a knack for writing contagious songs with imaginative lyrics.
His debut album, 320 Vaughn St., recorded in Nashville during the summer of 2018, was produced by Max Drummy of the Lauren Hill project, and mixed by Jeremy Fletcher.
Maclean’s deep tenor imbues the lyrics with tantalizing timbres, as well as savors of nonchalant concern about why he wasn’t invited over.
“Invite Me Over” opens on pop-rock flavors recalling The Kinks, alongside cool new wave suggestions. A thumping kick drum drives the rhythm along with a fat bassline, as percolating tones infuse the tune with joie de vivre. Maclean’s deep tenor imbues the lyrics with tantalizing timbres, as well as savors of nonchalant concern about why he wasn’t invited over.
Gleaming, almost frothy, vocal harmonies inject delicious glows of pop textures, suffusing the lyrics with bright depth and carbonated dimension. A vibrant piano carries the melody, bathing the melody in a sparkling flow topped by layers of effervescent colors.
The combination of new wave-lite push with bubbling pop surface hues gives the song an infectious bouncy feel that’s both entertaining and charmingly swanky and plush.
“Invite Me Over” is wonderfully wrought and original, full of luminous sonic essence juxtaposed against the wonderfully evocative voice of Neill Maclean.
