MORE SCRUMPTIOUS DREAM POP
Another deep drive through Bandcamp’s ‘Recent Arrivals’ in dream-pop revealed some luscious new music. It never fails to astonish me just how much fresh music is released every single day of the year – like tons and tons. And what’s so sad is that most of it will be passed over and/or neglected for want of exposure and promotion.
Okay, enough maudlin sentimentalism. On to the music!
Mid March – iii
Mid March, a dream-pop/bedroom pop artist from Huntington, California, dropped a new EP, called iii, at the end of August. As far as I can ascertain, Mid March is Natalie. She has an Instagram page, but it’s not much help, nor are her Soundcloud page or Bandcamp pages, as in zippo gen.
But hey, her music is wonderful. The EP, iii, encompasses three-tracks, staring off with “I Never Got It,” opening on shimmering synths and glistening guitar accents, all topped by Natalie’s deluxe voice, lusciously textured, light but declarative, and easy-to-listen-to.
“This Isn’t It,” the second track is more upbeat, but still creamy dreamy. My fave track is the third one, “I’m Dreaming,” flowing on gleaming metallic-flavored jangly guitars. Of course, the highlight is Natalie’s voice and the wistful lyrics.
“I wish that you’d like me like that sometimes / But it’s a give and take, of getting what I can / And I understand / I wish that you’d like me like that sometimes / Maybe I came a little late and you’re better off / And I understand.”
Of course, the highlight is Natalie’s voice and the wistful lyrics.
Caution – Unsaid/Standing On a Corner of Myself
On October 18, Caution, a dream-pop outfit or individual artist, whichever, released two tracks, which could be called a two-sided single or a dual track EP. I can’t find any info on this band/artist. A big fat NADA.
“Unsaid” ripples and flows with surging grainy colors, as the female voice, totally velvety and beguiling, delivers the lyrics. It’s a great track, but way too short. The second track, “Standing On a Corner of Myself” opens on crunching industrial percussion flowing into a darkwave dream-pop tune full of reverberating resonance. This time the cashmere timbres of a male vocalist sucks you in with his electrifying tones.
Stop Suffering – Win EP
This one is a bit perplexing. According to Stop Suffering’s sort-of-kind-of website, "’Hjördis-Britt Åström’ is a global music corporation that was formed and run by multi-instrumentalist, composer, DJ, sound-engineer, artist and supermaster Dmitry Gruber in 2014. One day, his unhuman creative power multiplied with eternal energy and the journey into the Abyss has begun. The feature of sounds is absolutely unexplainable by common words. Minimalistic synth-pop/new-wave/post-punk music forms are filled by mysterious visions, pure cosmic beauty, true rebel spirit, obsession with luxury and style of ‘70s/’80s-eras and endless inner freedom. All the songs are portals to other worlds.”
So Stop Suffering is Dmitry Gruber and his music is spellbindingly superb. According to the EP’s Bandcamp page all music is composed by D. Gruber, with vocals and lyrics provided by Diana (Lotusotus, Camille Paulette-Odell).
Tracks not to miss include “Ciao,” “Swim,” and the title track, “Win.”
