MONOWHALES DROP SUPERB ‘RWLYD’
Toronto’s indie-pop foursome Monowhales recently dropped a new single, called “RWLYD” – “Really Wanna Let You Down.”
According to the band, “Ever since we started making music, we've felt pressured to sound more like this, look a bit more like that, lose weight, cut our hair... As an indie band, we don't exemplify the cliche of happy-go-lucky artists pressured to fit a mold by the big, bad cigar-chomping record executive. Instead we struggle with the constant push-and-pull of both external and internal expectations that we feel the need to live up to, where sometimes the hardest ones to contend with are those we place on ourselves.”
“RWLYD” narrates the trodden-on sensation one experiences from outside influences, and the enormous relief of just letting go.
The song’s genesis occurred prior to the band’s tour supporting the release of Control Freak, an interlude that found the members of the band wrestling with psychological stress, and wondering if it was all worth it.
Monowhales most definitely have it going on!
Right now, Monowhales is prepping to go on the road once again, beginning in the middle of October and concluding in Vancouver, B.C., where they’ll put the final polish on their forthcoming album, produced by Ryan Worsley.
Formed in 2012, Monowhales is made up of Sally Shaar, Zach Zanardo, Jordan Circosta, and Holly Jamieson.
“RWLYD” opens on a crunching rhythm topped by pulsing synths exuding penetrating colors, and then flows into a throbbing pop-flavored melody rippling with sparkling accents. A cavernous bassline and dense drums provide muscle, as rich delicious vocals backed by glowing harmonies infuse the lyrics with tantalizing energy.
“Beat up / Belly up, belly up, barely looking for a ride home / Time’s up / Walking round the clock waking up in other time zones / Get down / Pack it up, pack it up, cause I really wanna skip town / I’m in and I’m out / Right here, right now / Oh she’s onto me / Batter up, batter up, baby let’s go / Oh she’s haunting me / Hold me up but I really wanna let you down.”
“RWLYD” fuses cool pop savors with thick tinctures of alt-rock, forming a grand sonic confection vibrating with intoxicating relish. Monowhales most definitely have it going on!
