MONICA ABEN RELEASES DAZZLING ‘IN YOUR UNIVERSE’
SoCal singer-songwriter Monic Aben recently released her full-length album, In Your Universe.
Recorded at Dockside Studios in Louisiana, with Justin Tocket and Ben Alleman, In Your Universe explores the seemingly chaotic milieu of modern-day life, where the sheer mass of emotions put stability at risk, until one day you realize all the pandemonium has resulted in a state-of-grace you wouldn’t change if you could.
A native of Venice, California, Aben discovered that, because of L.A.’s sheer size and concomitant traffic congestion, Millennials were favored house shows over performances at mainstream venues. She also realized larger venues diminished her ability to connect with audiences.
So she did something about it, creating The Sweatpant Series, intimate shows where artists and members of the audience reveal their stories between songs, while simultaneously benefitting the local community – 70% of proceeds go to Safe Place For Youth, in Venice. And everyone involved wears sweatpants.
Encompassing 10-tracks, the album starts off with “Almost Good Enough,” which opens on an elegant piano topped by Aben’s deliciously flavored voice, flowing into a melancholic-lite alt-pop melody, rife with undulating textures and radiant harmonies.
Aben’s voice assumes a delectable mysterious quality, bathing the lyrics in buttery stylish aromas.
Highlights include the gorgeously piano-driven “Feels So Good,” capped by Aben’s exquisitely evocative tones, inflected with sumptuous warm timbres, imbuing the lyrics with velvety liberating emotion. “Love I Need” flows on creamy layers of drawling colors, infusing the music with plush washes of graceful rippling filaments.
“The Beginning of Things” trembles with tantalizing surface tones, as Aben’s delectably polished voice oozes passionate sonic apostrophes on cashmere layers. The title track rides rolling percussive relishes, giving the rhythm a marvelous moving cadence. Aben’s voice projects frissons of heartfelt ambiance, both beautiful and beguiling.
“That’s Love” travels on a contagiously smooth rhythm, full of low-slung heft topped by sinuous strings and the sparkling piano. I love the luminous ethereal feel of this song, fragile and imminent at the same time. Aben’s voice assumes a delectable mysterious quality, bathing the lyrics in buttery stylish aromas.
With In Your Universe, Monica Aben delivers marvelously silky songs, full of tantalizing textures, all crowned by her luscious voice. This is a superb album.
