Philly’s punk rock outfit MINT recently released a new EP, called Cancer.
MINT is made up of Steve (drums), Jeff (guitar), Tom (bass), and Zoë (vocals), the drummer, guitarist, and bassist had been playing together, but lacked a kick-ass vocalist. Then they met Zoe at a Thanksgiving potluck, and got really thankful.
Zoe played violin and bass, but had never fronted a band. But hey, why not, right? So they tried it out and lo, and behold, they’s great. Since firming up the lineup, the band has played Western Massachusetts, Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Bloomington, Iowa City, and Columbus. They will be performing at Ottawa’s Outside Fest June 8, 9, along with a few other shows.
The band plays Fender guitars, along with Musicman and Peavey amps, while Steve pounds the bejesus out of Ludwig drums and Zildjian cymbals.
According to MINT, “We're mainly influenced by B-list energy drinks and rational skepticism.”
When the fuzzed-out guitars rocket up, the tune assumes nuclear actinic energy embellished by Zoe’s snarky tonal shades. She really holds it down!
Encompassing six-tracks, the title track is first, opening on raucous, strident guitars and tight drums topped by Zoe’s vicious riot-filled tones, fulminating with rasps and edgy timbres. “Who What Wear” rides stripped down muscular colors, with a twangy metallic gleam emanating from the guitars, as the vocal flow takes on skintight textures.
“Misgenderer” opens on delicious dissonant guitars dripping with growling dirty energy. The backing wail of a stellar ultra-piercing guitar adds snarling resonant jumpiness to the tune. “Caught” features a relentlessly thrumming riff and sneering accents, as Zoe’s sarcastic, grimacing tones fill the tune with irritated hues.
“Time Thief” stutters and splutters with brawny, tight coloration, lit up by murky smoke-filled tones from a guitar. “Pick One” opens on darker tones, full of ominous laced filaments. When the fuzzed-out guitars rocket up, the tune assumes nuclear actinic energy embellished by Zoe’s snarky tonal shades. It's a voice that really holds it down!
MINT parades searing raw energy, traveling on mega-dirty washes of guitars and the lusciously hoarse rasps emanating from Zoe’s vocal chords.
