Huntington Beach dream-pop/bedroom-pop artist Mid March dropped a delicious EP, entitled iii, a few months back.
According to Mid March, aka Natalie Han, “My EP iii was just a collection of songs I made during the summer going into my senior year and I wanted to capture my feelings at the time. I never actually meant to make an EP, I just thought the songs that I made meshed well with each other. All the songs are demos and I don't know if I am actually going to rerecord them or not. My favorite track is "im dreaming" because the lyrics mean a lot to me.”
She goes on to add, “I record and produce all my music in my bedroom and release it under the name Mid March. I want to record a longer EP by the time I go into college (I'm a high school senior currently).”
As indicated by the title, the EP comprises three tracks, starting off with “i never got it,” opening on breezy jangly guitars and glistening synths atop a throbbing kick-drum. Mid March’s creamy timbres infuse the lyrics with velvety wistful textures.
Mid March has beau coup talent. Hopefully, she’s working on new music.
“Why she crying with such a pretty face / She’s got what she needs, she’s got the time and place / She never got it / She never got it / Counting numbers all in threes, fuck it all she’s on knees / She never got it / She never got it / She never had it / Just forget it.”
“This isn’t it” rides an upbeat driving melody rife with tight jingly guitars exuding bright pop flavors, as Mid March’s scrumptiously admonitory tones imbue the lyrics with spontaneous regret.
“Uh oh it’s time to go / Uh oh look now you’re all alone / Thank you for all that you’ve done / Go home, I knew this was too fun.”
The best track on the EP, speaking subjectively, is “i’m dreaming,” which travels on two distinct guitar layers, one dark and trembling, the other glinting with sparkling tones. A simple, straight-ahead rhythm emphasizes the surface colors of the guitars, as well as the cashmere flow of Mid March’s tantalizing voice.
There’s a wonderful fresh originality about iii. It’s not overproduced or bathed in tech-injected enhancements, and the vocals are authentic. Mid March has beau coup talent. Hopefully, she’s working on new music.
