Toronto singer-songwriter Matt Zaddy recently released a new single, “Busy,” from his forthcoming album Be, slated to drop November 1. Produced by Ross Citrullo, the album was mastered by Joao Carvalho.
Zaddy sums up the song, saying, “You can be right or you can be happy.” And then adds, “Sometimes we want to be right so badly that we don’t care who we hurt in the process. I’ve found myself guilty of this more than once in my life, and writing this song was part of me realizing there has to be a better way. We can have open and honest conversation, and leave the daggers at the door.”
Oddly enough, when Zaddy began his music career, it was as a heavy metal musician. As time went by, Zaddy found himself wanting to connect with his listeners on a more organic level. So he shifted his sound to a blend of folk-rock, soul, and R&B. Since reinventing himself, Zaddy’s career has skyrocketed, including receiving a nomination for 2019’s Best Promoter from the Mississauga Music Awards, featured performer at Rock the Coliseum, and featured performances at Richmond Hill Center, Registry Theatre Kitchener, Showplace Theatre Peterborough, Bobcaygeon Summer Concert Series, and Mississauga Port Credit Summer Concert Series.

“Busy” opens on thick bluesy tones riding a crisp rhythmic pulse provided by crisp percussion and a plump popping bassline. I love the creamy oozing flavors of the guitar accents, infusing the tune with viscous colors and dripping textures.
Cool radiant vocal harmonies shimmer around Zaddy’s sweet high tenor, full of tasty passionate timbres, imbuing the lyrics with tight urgency.
“Here we go again / Same old story, same old picture, same old lecture / I wish we could let it be / Instead of inciting a riot in all our words of wisdom / It's such an easy fight, It's such an easy fight / When you're too busy bein' right / And I'm too busy bein' happy / You're too busy bein' right / We're slippin' away, until there's nothing left to fight for / Slippin' away, and we're both too busy bein' right.”
“Busy” exudes scrumptious R&B energy, an infectious rolling rhythm, delicious guitar licks, and the evocative voice of Matt Zaddy.
