Martha: British, Punk, Awesome

A little while back, I went to go see Jeff Rosenstock in concert. He was great, of course. However, the band that played between the opener and Rosenstock was an outfit called Martha.

I was not familiar with them going into the concert. I had briefly read about them online just to make sure they were a band I could feasibly be into. Previously, I had gone to a show where both of the openers turned out to be totally different than the headliner. Also, they both sucked. Still, I wanted to go in with a relatively clean slate, hoping to be surprised.

I was surprised, and pleasantly so. Martha was great. They are a British quartet that also feels like they have three frontpeople. There are two guys and one (tiny) woman, and they all take the lead on different songs. Then, of course, they will harmonize and sing choruses and refrains together. They have a DIY punk aesthetic but with a different sensibility than what we usually get here in these United States.

I was reminded of them again because YouTube recommended a video of them appearing on The Chris Gethard Show. I have never watched Gethard’s show, but based on the videos of musical performances I’ve seen we have the same taste in music pretty much. Charly Bliss made their television debut on their show! Martha played three songs, and while none of them is their best song “Ice Cream and Sunscreen,” the performance still gives you a good sense of the band. If they are ever on a concert bill in the future, it will definitely pique my interest.
