LEO LAUREN DAZZLES ON DEBUT SINGLE ‘SUPERNORMAL’
SoCal pop/new wave singer-songwriter Leo Lauren introduces his debut single, “Supernormal,” produced by Heather Baker and featuring the talent of Jarrod Alexander, the drummer of My Chemical Romance. “Supernormal” is the title track from Leo’s forthcoming debut EP, slated for this spring.

Explaining the song, Leo says, “’Supernormal’ ruminates on the desire for personal transcendence and fantasy, a secret yearning for our daily lives to attain the status of myth. However, such desire is persistently confounded by the limitations of occupying a physical body – a body subject to worldly demands as well as the waves of loneliness and isolation that accompany its individual existence. The song begins from this place with a twitchy, grooving tension; deliberating between poles of longing and restraint before finally unraveling into a cathartic release.”
Leo’s unique sound amalgamates elements of pop, Goth, soul, funk, metal, new wave, and alt-rock into distinctive sonic concoctions. Leo’s creations in painting, drawing, sculpture, writing, video, and apparel inform his music with innovative dimension and flair, adding to the freshness of his sound. Citing influences such as Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Idol, Kate Bush, David Bowie, Gorillaz, Tears for Fears, The Cure, and Peter Murphy, Leo’s compositions intertwine moods of emotional turbulence, longing, obsession, narcissism, persecution, masochism, love, and the friction generated when illusion rubs up against experience.

Right now, Leo is working on the music video for “Supernormal,” constructing an elaborate sci-fi setting, including original art pieces, as well as an alien bondage outfit reminiscent of Hellraiser.
“Supernormal” opens on shimmering, rolling synths topped by bright tones flowing into a new wave-flavored pop melody rife with velvety rippling colors. Tight percussion and a vibrating fat bassline imbue the tune with a retro-flavored rhythm, contagiously alluring.
