Alt-pop singer-songwriter Leaone just released a new music video, called “Prairie Fire,” a passionate song about smoldering desire and love left behind.

From Suffolk, Leaone traveled across the pond to Brooklyn, New York, where he worked with producer Tom Marsh of Lana Del Rey fame and Abe Seiferth on new material. The trip was made possible by the Arts Council England’s International Development fund.

The so-called “Brooklyn Sessions” resulted in lots of new music, the first of which is “Prairie Fires,” a worthy follow-up to Leaone’s two previous EPs, Oh My Sweetest Sin and Wild Horse Ride On.

At some point, he lost his job, his girlfriend, and got mugged, all in the same day.

Elusive and mysterious, little hard information is available about Leaone. This is what we do know: he started writing music at a young age, followed by performing as a chorister. His primary musical influence is Chris Cornell and Soundgarden. Prior to going solo, he was a punk rocker. At some point, he lost his job, his girlfriend, and got mugged, all in the same day. With Fierce Panda Records for a while, it’s unclear if he’s still with the label, or any label for that matter. He probably should be, but that’s another topic all together.

“Prairie Fires” opens on buzzing, droning synths, emergent and sizzling with fervent colors. A cavernous bass line and clapping percussion drive the brawny rhythm, along with a thumping kick drum. It’s almost a trap-lite beat, but suffused with R&B flavors. Light guitar riffs provide tasty accents, along with glimmering synths.

Leaone’s voice, a deep tenor full of delicious rasping timbres, infuses the tune with Johnny Cash-like intensity, almost nonchalant on one hand, but discharging almost palpable textured energy, on the other hand. It’s sensuous, but austere; melancholic, but blazing with tumescent heat. The combination of rap-lite flow and sinuous melodicism imbues the lyrics with nuances of tight fluency.

“Prairie Fires” is rife with haunting tones, which, along with the potent rhythm give the harmonics complex, titanic sonic force.
