KRISTEN CASTRO GLOWS ON ‘BLOOM’
Singer-songwriter Kristen Castro recently released a single/music video, called “Bloom, her first new music since departing indie-country/American group Maybe April.
Talking about the song’s inspiration, Castro says, "I wrote 'Bloom' in reflection of opening my eyes to the basic beauty and rebirth found in nature. The lyric 'Bloom' and 'Flowers don't get to give up' came from walking through a field of poppies in my hometown in California that wildfires had burned the year before. It was a superbloom and the sight overtook my senses, especially after contemplating how to get out of a dark space."
Writing songs since she was 10-years-old, Castro later began playing in metal bands, developing an acute awareness of rhythm and power. After that, she toured the U.S. as part of Maybe April, sharing the stage with Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, and Gavin DeGraw. Now based in Nashville Castro’s sound blends folk, pop, electronica, rock, country, Americana, and punk into delicious musical concoctions, utilizing a profusion of instruments, including acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass, piano, synths, and banjo, along with electro-percussion.
Pervaded by silky nuances and burnished timbres, it’s one of the most enchanting voices extant.
“Bloom” opens on shimmering undulating colors riding a hefty bassline and crisp percussion flowing into a creamy lustrous dream pop melody. Velvety textures infuse the tune with spun-out gossamer filaments of glistening translucence. The combination of the luminous synths with the hefty rhythmic pulse gives the harmonics a scrumptious fusion of layered hues.
As the song advances, the swell, pressure, and resonance slowly escalate, shifting tempo, until the harmonics coalesce into a brilliant cashmere flow of scintillating hues, like a sonic rainbow arching up and over.
The highlight of the song is Castro’s gorgeously supple voice, projecting potent spectral tones shot through with myriad bewitching points of luminescence. Pervaded by silky nuances and burnished timbres, it’s one of the most enchanting voices extant.
With “Bloom,” Kristen Castro delivers one of the best dream-pop songs so far this year, a song of full-spectrum allure and loveliness.
