IRRESISTIBLE ROOTS BLUES FROM JAY POLLMANN – ‘ONE DAY OLDER NONE THE WISER’
A few days ago, Ontario-based roots blues singer-songwriter Jay Pollmann released his sophomore full-length LP, One Day Older None The Wiser.
Talking about the album, Jay shares, “To me, One Day Older None The Wiser is a road trip type of album. It has a very Canadian feel and vibe. While taking the leap of selling everything and traveling across Eastern Canada full time with my young family, I was searching for answers to determine if it was ever worth the effort to create a full album again. Upon arriving back in Ontario and full of inspiration from the travels my musical fire was re-lit. I wrote and reworked 10 songs, took them into the studio, and recorded One Day Older None The Wiser.”
Produced by Aaron Goldstein and recorded at Baldwin Street Sound, the album features Jay Pollmann (vocals, guitars), Aaron Goldstein (pedal steel, guitars, bass, drums), Dani Nash (drums), Carleigh Aikins (vocals)l, Jesse O’Brien (piano, organ, Wurlitzer), and Steve Marriner (harmonica).
Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Jay grew up in Cayuga. Converting from woodworker to songwriter, he played with the dirt rock trio Gruve for ten years, followed by dropping his EP, Head In The Clouds in 2017. After traveling around Canada, he returned to Ontario to lay down tracks for the new album.
Describing his sound as “foot-stompin' rootsy blues,” Jay lays it down with gusto.
Radiant backing harmonies give the song a glowing attraction.
Encompassing 10-tracks, the album begins with “In The Land Of Standing Water,” opening on a breezy, blues-flavored guitar riding a contagious rhythm. Jay’s voice, reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, imbues the lyrics with sumptuous tones. When the harmonics shift, the tune takes on rambling, almost bluegrass-folk savors.
Entry points include the title track, rolling out on twangy steel guitar textures, followed by flowing into creamy undulations of Americana aroma mixed with cool, alt-country tints. Radiant backing harmonies give the song a glowing attraction. As the song takes on resonance and a driving rhythm, it becomes a dazzling sonic confection.
“Rest Our Bones” is the perfect example of “foot-stompin' rootsy blues,” featuring the deliciously wailing rasp of Marriner’s superb harmonica. “Low and Behold” blends alt-rock, Americana, and SoCal country rock into a bewitching tune topped by Jay’s rich, evocative voice.
“Great Lakes and Streams” rides dark, dirty guitars, filling the tune with humming energy, while the last track, “Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way,” delivers potent, stripped-down twangy tangs of Mississippi blues.
On One Day Older None The Wiser, Jay Pollmann pumps out wickedly catchy blues music chockfull of captivating surfaces, capped by tempting vocals.
