INTO THE WAVES RELEASE ‘1’ AND ‘2’
Into The Waves, a lo-fi dream pop outfit from Tasikmalaya, Indonesia released two singles, entitled “1” and “2,” on January 21. Right up front, let me say these two tracks go beyond outstanding and enter the rarified realm of the ineffably superlative, like the harbinger of hypermnesia, contriving delectable moods in artful sequence.
Once again, there’s very little info about the band available. Their Bandcamp page does name the members of the band: M. Heru (lead vocals, guitar), Andri Batak (guitar), Idris Syaeful (vocals, bass), and Abdulrahman (drums). And that’s it. There is nothing else.
No matter. Their music, like fat billowing clouds on a pristine blue sky, floats sumptuously through the atmosphere, conveying wonderful soundscapes in which to indulgently bathe. This is dreamy-creamy dream-pop, nuanced with tantalizing surface hues.
“1” opens on gleaming oscillated tones flowing into a marvelous syncopated rhythm provided by soft round thumping drums and a smoothly rolling bassline. Iridescent guitars exude gossamer textures of sonic color, velvety, almost syrupy cashmere, as Heru’s sylph-like tones ride luxuriously overhead.
This band – Into The Waves – is ooh la la.
Delicate harmonic allusions, elusive yet proximate, infuse the tune with gracious metallic undertones polished to a high glossy patina.
“2” travels on spiraling futuristic synths and the transitions to silky effusions of coloration. Like “1,” the rhythm is supple, undulating, and ripples on percolating pulsations. Scintillating coruscations of sound emanate from the guitars while Heru’s wistful haunting timbres move on softly glowing tendrils, imbuing the lyrics with distant enchanting flavors.
This band – Into The Waves – is ooh la la. They avoid any dreary flatness, while simultaneously breathing palpable vitality into their music, intense yet balanced by a sense of mysterious piquancy.
With “1” and “2,” Into The Waves immediately establish themselves as one of the best dream-pop bands extant. A major-label needs to rush in and scoop this band up.
