Québec’s Ghostly Kisses, the dream-pop project of singer-songwriter Margaux Sauvé, released her lush new EP, Never Let Me Go, a few moments ago.
According to Ghostly Kisses’ Bandcamp page, “The name ‘Ghostly Kisses’ was inspired from reading William Faulkner’s poem Une ballade des dames perdues and seemed like the perfect reflection of her ethereal voice.
“Une ballade des dames perdues” translates to “a ballad of the lost ladies,” which contains the phrase “ghostly kisses.”
“A sort of ethereal seduction
They hear, alas
My women
And brush my lips with little ghostly kisses
Stealing away
Singly, their tiny ardent faces
Like windflowers from some blown garden of dreams.”
When the mellow piano enters, the tune quietly swells with complicated energy.
Musicians appearing on the EP include String quartet: Caroline Béchard, Jany Fradette, Marie-Claude Perron, Suzanne Villeneuve; Marie-Rose Lehoux (harp); Antoine Angers (guitar); Charles-Auguste Lehoux (mandolin, acoustic guitar); and Alex Kirouac (drums).
With six-tracks, the EP begins with the title track, opening on an enchantingly elegant piano, lightly snapping percussion, and emerging synths. Drifting, wafting, and wavering, trickling down like gentle rain, the luminous melody provides a luscious ocean of color for Sauvé’s exquisite, haunting voice.
“Never let me go / I wanna know what lies ahead / Ahead of us / Never let me fall / I wanna live up here / Up here in your arms / Please don't go now / Stay where you are / Please don't go now / Come back home.”
“Call My Name” travels on tantalizing gleaming filaments of sonic color, vaguely reminiscent of Julia Fordham, only creamier and more beguiling. Other highlights comprise “Where Do Lovers Go?” – soft and aglow with warm, expansive vocal harmonies, topped by Sauvé’s delicate, almost waif-like timbres. When the mellow piano enters, the tune quietly swells with complicated energy.
“Stay” is a personal favorite, simply because of its velvety sparkling coloration, followed by more insistent glistening hues entering, and Sauvé’s bewitching voice.
With Never Let Me Go, Ghostly Kisses propounds one of the year’s best dream-pop albums, at once subtle and gloriously resplendent.
