Frayle

From Cleveland, the band was formed in 2017 by Sean Bilovecky and Gwyn Strang, and now includes Elliot Rosen (rhythm guitar), Eric Mzik (bass), and Pat Ginley (drums). Billed as “heavy, low, and witchy,” as well as a "female-fronted doom and witch-rock band,” Frayle describes their sound as “lullabies over chaos,” i.e. thick, dense doom riffs topped by ethereal vocal melodies, bursting with discomfiting melancholy.

Frayle’s lyrics relate tales of heartbreak, anger, hypocrisy, and resolution, while their musical influences derive from bands such as Sleep, Portishead, Beastwars, Blonde Redhead, Kyuss, Massive Attack, Down, Chelsea Wolfe, and others. According to their website, Frayle “exists at the intersection of doom and dream-pop.”

Ponderously, like a great machine ingesting bales of gloomy lore, the actinic glow of Strang’s keening voice serves to heighten the irresistible sonic coils.

“Godless” opens on searing feedback flowing into massively subterranean guitars full of pulverizing vibrations. A measured rhythm rides hefty crunching drums and a cavernous bassline, as Strang’s wickedly whispery, eerie voice infuses the lyrics with shadowy timbres emanating sibilant textures.

“We’re living in the mundane / Looking for life in gravestones / Living like you have no choice / You know we build our own thrones / Can’t always walk among the pure / Can’t always walk among the blessed / Sometimes I feel so insecure / Sometimes I feel godless.”

The juxtaposition of grinding, groaning clots of gravitational harmonics with delicate, ominous vocal tones imbues the tune with both muscular physical projection and fragile elegance. Ponderously, like a great machine ingesting bales of gloomy lore, the actinic glow of Strang’s keening voice serves to heighten the irresistible sonic coils.

Untrammeled and powerful, “Godless” reveals the vast primitive supremacy of dread-filled doom attended by glowing ghostly vocals.
