Fly My Pretties

The brainchild of The Black Seeds’ frontman, Barnaby Weir, the original idea of the band was to bring together uniquely talented musicians, who could then exchange concepts and perform live. So successful was the idea that Fly My Pretties soon encompassed more than 50 members, including musicians from established bands such as Lord Echo, The Phoenix Foundation, Trinity Roots, Hollie Smith, and Terrible Sons.

Founded in 2004, in Wellington, New Zealand, the band’s name was taken from The Wizard of Oz, specifically, the Wicked Witch of the West, who commands the Winged Monkeys, “Fly, my pretties, fly.”

The Studio Recordings comprises 10-tracks, beginning with “Singing In My Soul,” a gentle alt-folk-flavored tune topped by deliciously gorgeous vocals and harmonies.

“Take It From Me” blends cool savors of R&B with the muscle of trip-pop into a smoldering sexy tune rife with scrumptious soulful vocals backed by suave harmonies.

Highlights on the album include “Quiet Girl,” which opens on an oozing sensuous melody reminiscent of Chris Isaak, wickedly stylish and undulating. Dreamy captivating vocals infuse the tune with sumptuous textures, as gleaming guitars exude sultry colors full of trembling resonance. A slow tantalizing guitar solo imbues the harmonics with nuanced risky hues.

“Take It From Me” blends cool savors of R&B with the muscle of trip-pop into a smoldering sexy tune rife with scrumptious soulful vocals backed by suave harmonies. “Bag Of Money” rolls on skiffing guitars and a tight one-drop beat, providing a tasty trundling reggae tune. A fat round bassline sets the rhythm, as glistening accents pave the way for the polished vocals.

“Never Blown Like It’s Goin’” rides dark rumbling bluesy energy atop a slightly funky groove, and features delightfully glowing gospel-tinged harmonies, as well as a tautly drawling organ. The last track, “Angels,” is glorious, traveling on a choir of a cappella voices delivering ineffably gorgeous gospel timbres.

With The Studio Recordings, Fly My Pretties dishes out an array of dazzling sounds, compelling rhythms, and marvelous vocals, making this a superbly attractive album.
