FLATTERY RELEASES SILKY-SMOOTH ‘OTHER ESSENCES’

Dream-pop outfit Flattery released their debut album, entitled Other Essences, January 3.

Other Essences

Flattery | Anna Fuller

The musical brainchild of Anna Fuller, who’s 22-years-old and just graduated from college about eight months ago, Flattery, formerly based in Chicago, now calls Philly home. According to Fuller, “The album was recorded and mixed in various bedroom studio setups over the course of the last year, with songs that were written between 2017 and 2019. It was mastered by an engineer in Sweden.”

All the songs on Other Essences were written and performed by Fuller, except “In the Night,” which was co-written by Gabe Jimenez-Ekman, who, along with Fuller, produced the album, as well as doing most of the mixing. The album was mastered by Frida Claeson Johansson.

Drums on “In the Night” and Now Way Out” performed by Gus Chial and recorded by Andrew Perelman. Cover art for the album by Daniela Grande.

Embracing eight-tracks, Other Essences commences with “In the Night,” opening on coruscating streaming colors full of new wave savors, layered with sparkling accents from the guitar. Fuller’s soft dreamy voice infuses the lyrics with ethereal textures.

Fuller’s luminous tones mount on sinuous timbres couched on cashmere tones, saturating the lyrics in whelming washes of glossy ambiance.

“We’re outside / Turn out your light / So I can’t see you / And in the night it won’t feel right / All in the glass / Is all I have / My memories of / We’re outside.”

Highlights, from a purely subjective perspective, include “Quiet,” riding diaphanous undulating surfaces, as Fuller’s low-voice, velvety and sumptuous, instills the tune with radiant resonant timbres. Because of its buttery flow and shiny circumflexes, “Quiet” is my favorite track on the album.

“Devotion” travels on low-slung throbbing depth, while glittering colors gleam atop, imbuing the tune with dual layers of pigmentation, one husky, the other light and breezy.

“Shadow” cruises on thick layers of sonic hues, floating across the soundscape with driving impetus, yet simultaneously gentle and buff.  Fuller’s luminous tones mount on sinuous timbres couched on cashmere tones, saturating the lyrics in whelming washes of glossy ambiance.

“And if there was a way / To see what you could say / To have another day / It’s always locked inside the shadows that you left behind / I wanna hear the echoes in my mind / And all I wanna do is stay behind and be with you.”

Other Essences has it all: delicate effortless tides of rolling colors, contagious rhythmic movement, and the exquisitely honed voice of Anna Fuller.
