The band explains “As They Do,” saying, “This song is about being in a mass social situation – the buzz of being in a huge group of people whether it’s at a gig seeing your favourite band or watching your beloved football team score. ‘They’ in ‘As They Do’ represents a passionate crowd.”

According to the band, “As They Do” is the product of merging two different songs. The song wasn’t fashioned overnight, but came together over time.

Guitarist Reid MacMaster told Coralie Daigneault of ic3y mag how the band’s songs take shape: “Lyrics will generally come last because when a song is being built we try and base the vibe around something and get the whole feel of the song and from that we’ll think of what the song can be about; like what feelings are we getting from this. That’s for me, I can’t speak for you guys cause we’re all lyric writers but I mean, for me I kinda hear a song and think of a message from how the song is being built and base my lyrics around that.”

Taut, edgy yet melodic vocals infuse the lyrics with urgent intensity, and the four-part harmonies give the music sheens of cool radiance.

Formed in 2013, Fade Awaays is made up of Reid MacMaster (guitar), Duncan Briggs (bass), Sean Hackl (guitar), and Owen Wolff (drums). The band dropped their debut EP, Taste of Life, at the beginning of 2019. They’ve toured throughout Eastern Canada, and have shared the stage with Wolf Alice, The Beaches, Hot Flash Heat Wave, The Sherlocks, and Public Access TV.

“As They Do” opens on a crunching drum shuffle followed by shimmering rawboned guitar riffs expanding in depth and scope. Taut, edgy yet melodic vocals infuse the lyrics with urgent intensity, and the four-part harmonies give the music a sheen of cool radiance.

A potent rhythm, especially on the drum-filled breakdown, rumbling with muscular throbs, gives the tune a raw visceral vibe, on the delicious brink of scruffy. Hints of retro punk, along with dollops of psych-pop savors bathe the harmonics with primal dynamism.

A dirty searing guitar solo injects the tune with raw gritty tones, as if played through speakers with rough bumps and gouges, skintight and chaffering for projection.

“As They Do” is excellent, combining raw energy, a contagiously magnetic rhythm, and yummy vocals into a scrumptiously penetrating song.
