EVEN EDEN – ‘WELCOME TO THE WHITE ROOM’
Darkwave post-punk outfit Even Eden recently released a new track, entitled “Welcome to the White Room,” which will appear on the band’s forthcoming EP, A Ghost, slated for release November 22. The EP was recorded and mixed by Devin McDonnell at WarmWave Studios, and mastered by Neil Sabatino at Forest of Chaos.
Lyrically, “Welcome to the White Room” was inspired by Jeff Garvin’s book Symptoms of Being Human. According to the band, “Dynamics were very important to us with this track. It was the first time that we explored creating atmosphere using different layers of sound as a band.”
A trio, Even Eden is made up of Madeleine St. Jacques (guitar, vocals), Zac Smith (bass, vocals), and MR (drums, vocals). Readers of Rawckus know the site is big on gear. Even Eden was kind enough to provide detailed gen on the gear utilized while recording A Ghost.
Bassist Zachary Smith used a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass, without any mods. He employed the following pedals: Electro Harmonix Oceans 11, Electro Harmonix Op Amp Big Muff, ZVEX Instant Lo-Fi Junky, ZVEX Fat Fuzz Factory, and Deadbeat DeLayLayLay.
Guitarist Madeleine St. Jacques played a Fender Telecaster Thinline Deluxue, semi-hollow with P90 pickups, and no mods. Her pedals included MXR Analog Chorus, EarthQuaker Devices Ghost Echo, Boss DD-3 Digital Delay, MXR Superbadass Distortion, and DigiTech FreqOut.
St. Jacques’ voice exudes spine-tingling timbres rife with a sense of imminence, like the Sirens of Sirenum scopuli luring passing ships onto the rocks.
MR’s drum kit: four-piece PDP, with Sabian and Zildjian cymbals, along with an Alesis electronic pad.
Even Eden formed in 2018 in Montclair, New Jersey. Their sound has been described as “haunting, hypnotic, and heavy.” In her impressive review, Amelia Vandergast wrote, “From cutting angular guitar notes to synergetic build-ups of instrumental chaos, ‘Welcome to the White Room’ has it all, including the mesmerizing vocals from Madeleine. While the vocals don’t fade into the mix as much as Shoegaze vocals, there’s still that tangible Dream Wave edge behind the single.”
“Welcome to the White Room” opens on a glistening guitar riff, followed by the entry of a fat round bassline riding sidestick percussion. After the second verse, the harmonics ramp up, as a dirty muscular guitar suffuses the tune with surging grating textures. The combination of dark delicate flavors flowing into wickedly viscous crushing tones gives the tune a delicious Jekyll and Hyde ambiance.
St. Jacques’ voice exudes spine-tingling timbres rife with a sense of imminence, like the Sirens of Sirenum scopuli luring passing ships onto the rocks. It’s an entrancing voice full of lethal edginess.
“Welcome to the white room / It's the place where you go / When you want to free up your mind / And escape the undertow.”
The other track from A Ghost available for listening is “Taking Flight,” which opens on a deep spilling guitar seguing into thick echoing resonance traveling on a starkly visceral alt-rock melody topped by St. Jacques’ magnetic femme fatale tones.
Even Eden delivers exquisitely portentous music, trenchant and percolating with complex moods and subtle sonic nuances, both raw and refined. This is a band that should be on a major label.
