DYLYN RELEASES ‘CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT’
Canadian pop singer-songwriter Dylyn released her new music video, entitled “Call Me What You Want,” a few days ago.
Dylyn explains, “’Call Me What You Want’ is a who gives a fuck what anyone thinks of you, drive down the highway singing at the top of your lungs with the music blasting kind of song.”
Talking about the song/video, Dylyn says, “I’ve been spending the current zombie apocalypse on a rural property on the outskirts of Toronto, listening to Black Sabbath and making demonic masks for my band to wear in the official video for ‘Call Me What You Want,’ my brand new single.”
She goes on to add, “I'm really excited to drop the music video. No perfect lighting setting, no planned shots... just me in raw form, letting the animal out and being free. It's amazing because I get to work with my brother on the creative side with his company Virul Media and the great director that is Erik Damas.”
Dylyn first made waves when she debuted her EP, Sauvignon and a Kimono, in 2018, featuring the track “Secret.” Sans fanfare and almost totally bereft of promotion, about six months after the song appeared, it went viral, amassing more than 100 million streams.
Dylyn’s powerful, almost snarling tones inject the lyrics with wicked colors and tantalizingly throbbing dynamics.
Shortly after the EP dropped, Dylyn hooked up with Los Angeles-based producer Colin Munroe, who emboldened her to incorporate heavier rock vibes in her music. Then she collaborated with Ryan Guldemond.
Dylyn told TotalNtertainment, “Everyone says just be yourself. It’s the hardest thing to do. A lot of artists are natural pleasers. I struggled with that for a long time: making sure everyone in the room was okay and happy at the cost of my art and my truth. This is the first time where it’s more about the art and less about what other people think, going back to what I enjoyed doing about this in the first place. That’s why I couldn’t sleep after those sessions with Ryan.”
Over the course of 2020, Dylyn will release new tracks, capped by her new EP, Make it Naked, slated to drop in 2021.
“Call Me What You Want” opens on surging alt-rock guitars bedecked in dark sonic energy riding a Jovian crunching rhythm. Dylyn’s powerful, almost snarling tones inject the lyrics with wicked colors and tantalizingly throbbing dynamics.
“Call me what you want / Don’t you play with me, ‘cause I’m a loaded gun / Say it to my face, O might lose it, pull the pin in my grenade / ‘Cause underneath the surface I’m a villain, underneath the surface I’m a villain / So call me what you want, don’t you play with me ‘cause I’m a loaded gun.”
With “Call Me What You Want,” Dylyn turns it loose both musically and lyrically, generating a song chock-full of emotional emancipation.
