Hip-hop artist Darrin Jones, who hails from Columbus, Georgia, keeps turning out tight bangers. His latest singles are “Blush” and “In My Dreams.”
Both tracks are from Jones’ debut EP, To The Moon, a collection of vintage pop vibes and cool R&B flavors atop a contemporary new wave, psychedelic hip-hop flow that’s smooth, compelling, and hecka contagious.
Only 22-years-old, Jones started his music career as a youngster, writing original rhymes and setting them to beats. He kicked off his public introduction in 2017, releasing “Love Thief” and “4Me,” as well as appearing on the remix of “Playa, Brisa Y Mar,” a spicy Latin hip-hop track by Godie Souza and General Street.
“Blush” rides a velvety R&B-flavored hip-hop melody, tight and muscular, but simultaneously creamy and sensuous. Jones’ flow, laced with rich low-slung tones, complements the deep pulse of the tune’s rhythm, which pulses on brawny harmonics. Glossy, radiant background vocals infuse the music with depth and fill in the gaps with velvety timbres.
Why is this artist unsigned? That’s the question of the day.
“In My Dreams” features a more traditional trap beat, rife with colorful synths and a cavernous bass line that, with the thumping kick drum, really galvanizes the groove with subterranean concentration. The teeter-totter sway of the harmonics, along with the deep-rooted beat, gives the song two distinct layers of sonic momentum, one elegant and charming, the other hypertrophically muscular and intoxicating.
Jones’ flow is melodic and avoids skintight spitting, which infuses the lyrics with cashmere surfaces both tantalizing and easy to listen to.
What’s really impressive about Jones, aside from his electrifying, marvelous music, is the way he’s grown his following on social media: almost 100,000 followers on Instagram, along with 14,500 followers on Twitter. These are stellar numbers for an independent artist, which makes it clear Darrin Jones realizes how to market his music, a talent sadly lacking in today’s indie ranks.
“Blush” and “In My Dreams” are dope, low-slung bangers that bring the heat. Darrin Jones definitely has it going on. Why is this artist unsigned? That’s the question of the day.
