Sydney, Australia’s electro-pop duo Cosmo’s Midnight just released their DIY video for “Yesteryear,” a song about envisioning the future, which is appropriate in the current world landscape.
In conversation with NME’s Jackson Langford, Pat Liney said, “We wrote the song in December and January, and even January was so hectic. This year has been so full-on that people have already forgotten about the bushfires. There’s been so much shitty stuff that it’s already been pushed to the back of people’s minds. The song is called ‘Yesteryear’ because not only is the tonal palette of the song throwback, which follows what we’ve been doing with our last releases, but thematically, it’s about looking into the past and learning and growing from it, while also not dwelling on it.”
Because of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, they had to create their own music video. So they put together a brainstorming session with their team via Zoom. The result is refreshing, really, eschewing the polished stylized surface shine so prevalent in today’s music videos.
The retro feel of the song conjures up ‘70’s pop tinged with kaleidoscopic creamy textures.
Well-known in Sydney and the rest of Down Under, Cosmo’s Midnight has more than one million monthly listeners on Spotify, along 195 million streams across various platforms, including fans in Australia, the U.S., Korea, the UK, and Mexico, as well as beaucoup airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Triple J.
Their previous single, “C.U.D.I.” achieved gold certification, their fifth gold record, while “Down For You” has amassed millions of streams and views on YouTube. The also dropped a bunch of collaborations along the way, like “Have It All” with age.sex.location, ‘It’s Love’ with Matthew Young, and the aforementioned ‘Down For You’ with Ruel.
“Yesteryear” starts off with the Zoom session, talking about how to make the video, followed by the entry of shimmering synths and a funk-lite rhythm full of hints of dance-lite dynamics. The retro feel of the song conjures up ‘70’s pop tinged with kaleidoscopic creamy textures. Patrick’s falsetto is delicious, cool, and smooth, rife with nuanced timbres.
With “Yesteryear,” Cosmo’s Midnight demonstrate why they’re so popular Down Under, as well as why I suspect they’ll achieve oodles of recognition in the U.S.
