Alt-pop outfit Bus Stop Poets just released a new single from their forthcoming album, Leave It To The Kids, slated to drop July 26.
Made up of John Mabilia (vocals, guitar), Johnny Edick (bass, vocals), Randy Nelson (drums), and Cindee Lish (vocals, percussion), Bus Stop Poets’ sound amalgamates skintight vocal harmonies with lush swelling pop flavors. Mike Olinger of The Vinyl District summed up the band’s sound, describing it as "Crosby, Stills and Nash (Down Under)...with a lilting narrative quality that conjures up mid-70s Eagles."
Citing influences such as Bob Seger, MC5, and The Stooges, Bus Stop Poets’ music emanates savors reminiscent of Wilco, Gomez, Fleetwood Mac, and The Raconteurs.
The band’s self-titled debut dropped in 2013, and featured “Beautiful Day,” a song picked up and synced by Chevy in their national television campaign, along with highlighting two episodes of Showtime’s Shameless.
Indeed, it’s the delicious vocal harmonies in conjunction with the supple harmonic undulations that make the song so mesmerizing.
“Blow” opens on a deep dark oozing shuffle full of sinuous creamy colors. The groove is sensual and potent, riding a fat bass line and taut snare. Mabilia’s deliciously tight voice infuses the lyrics with drawling flavors, as radiant gospel-flavored almost doo-wop harmonies pervade the backdrop, glowing with surging hues.
Streaming strings imbue the tune with buttery flows of harmonics, adding a kind of gleaming murky depth and sonic dimension, like oil glistening on the surface of still water. A sighing breakdown shifts the harmonics to a wickedly velvety texture pushing into a dreamy drift topped by sublimely gorgeous vocal harmonies.
The coalescence of the strings, guitar, and dripping wet harmonies prior to the breakdown suffuses the song with resonant gossamer textures of exquisite beauty, nuanced with subtle timbres and cashmere tones. Indeed, it’s the delicious vocal harmonies in conjunction with the supple harmonic undulations that make the song so mesmerizing.
“Blow” delivers wonderful smoldering colors, fabulous vocal harmonies, a palpably potent rhythm, and John Malibia’s impressive voice.
